ISLAMABAD: According to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the total value of recoveries by NAB in the second quarter of 2026 stands at Rs2.45 trillion in movable, immovable properties, and cash. It is quite evident that there has been a substantial jump in the number of recoveries from the Rs456.3 billion recorded in the same period of 2025.

As per NAB, the agency was able to recover Rs2,452 billion through direct and indirect recoveries in the second quarter of 2026 only. When this is added to the Rs2,962 billion recovered in the first quarter, the total recoveries of the first half of 2026 amounted to Rs5,414 billion, which shows that the recovery activities of the bureau have picked up momentum considerably.

The bureau recovered a total of 1,078,283 acres of land belonging to the state in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and the ICT. The level of land recovery is thus an important part of the totals behind NAB recovers assets Q2 2026. It shows the extent to which the value recovered was that of land instead of cash or movable property.

Among the NAB’s regional offices, NAB Sukkur managed to secure the maximum recoveries through its cooperation with the Sindh Board of Revenue and the Secretary, Forestry. These recoveries include land worth Rs1.01 trillion belonging to NHA, Forest Department, and Irrigation Department amounting to 853,678 acres. As per NAB, the recovered land has already been mutated in favor of the Sindh government.

NAB Balochistan has restored 209,544 acres of state-owned land with an estimated value of Rs. 604.64 billion. It is important to note that this land includes areas of forests and some of the best natural reserves like the Hingol National Park located on the Coastal Highway and land owned by GIEDA.

The NAB of Karachi has managed to recover 11,422 acres of illegally allotted state land as well as land on lease to housing societies and individuals based on doubtful transactions, which is worth Rs 467.11 billion. NAB of Lahore managed to recover 1,909 acres of state lands owned by the Punjab Cooperatives Board for Liquidation (PCBL), which is worth Rs 288.29 billion. 810 acres of land in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have also been recovered by the bureau, which is worth Rs 66.63 billion.

However, in instances concerning property and financial crimes, there have been more than 24,365 persons benefited with compensation in terms of getting back their looted money or properties worth Rs42.303 billion. This particular aspect of the bureau’s activities indicates a concrete benefit for common people who had earlier lost their money or property due to fraud.

NAB Recovers Assets: A Shift Toward Digital and AI-Based Investigation

Apart from the success rates, the NAB has also moved on to an E-Office model which relies entirely on paperless and automated operations. Now, the bureau is moving on into what it refers to as a transformational phase, adopting an E-Investigation approach based on artificial intelligence to facilitate investigations through pattern recognition and prioritization of risks.

According to NAB, the process of investigation with the help of such an AI tool leaves absolutely no space for any human discretionary powers, and thus helps in conducting an AI-based analysis and investigation of oral and documentary evidence, which results in evidence-based and tamper-free testimonies. In order to do so, Pakistan Anti Corruption Academy (PACA) has been developed into a Centre of Excellence to cater to the training needs of the bureau’s staff.
