ISLAMABAD: Three international scholarship opportunities are currently open to Pakistani students for upcoming academic sessions. The United Kingdom. Switzerland. Bangladesh. Different rules for each. Different funding. Different deadlines. Students need to understand those differences before applying.
Start with the big one. The Commonwealth Scholarship Programme 2027–28 funds full-time Master's and PhD study in the UK, and this year Pakistan holds 26 nomination slots for Master's candidates plus 30 for PhD candidates. Fifty-six HEC nomination slots, total, though nomination is only the first stage; final scholarship selection rests with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Pakistani and Azad Jammu and Kashmir nationals qualify if they permanently reside in Pakistan or AJK. Dual nationals are out.
Scholarships for Pakistani Students
Candidates have to submit two applications, not one through the HEC portal, and separately through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's own system. Skip either one and the application simply doesn't count. October 20, 2026 is the cutoff.
Academic thresholds aren't uniform either. Master's applicants need a first division in a 16-year bachelor's degree. PhD applicants need a first division at the 17- or 18-year Master's, MS or MPhil level. Everyone needs 60 out of 100 on HEC's HAT test, no matter which track they're on.
The next major deadline arrives on October 31. The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–28 window closes that day. This one's built for postgraduate researchers, a 12-month research scholarship, or a PhD track stretching up to three years, depending on which programme a candidate lands and what conditions apply.

Switzerland doesn't work like the UK route at all, and HEC is making sure nobody confuses the two. Islamabad doesn't nominate anyone here. It just puts the listing on its website. From there, applicants deal directly with Switzerland's own process, start to finish. That distinction matters because an opportunity appearing on HEC's website does not necessarily mean HEC manages the selection process.
Then there's Bangladesh. Four seats. That's it. The Bangladesh University of Professionals is offering four spots to Pakistani students for the 2026–27 session, but the subject spread is unusually wide for such a small number business, economics, international relations, law, journalism, computer science, cyber security, data science, environmental science, pharmacy.

One catch here too. This is not a fully funded scholarship. Students get an 80% tuition waiver, dropping costs to around $180 a semester. Accommodation, food, everything else that's on the student. The application window runs much longer than the other two, staying open until December 31, 2026. Classes start January 31, 2027.
October Scholarship Deadlines Are Closing Fast

Put the three side by side and the spread is striking doctoral research in Switzerland, journalism studies in Bangladesh and postgraduate degrees across British universities but the deadlines don't leave much breathing room. Commonwealth closes first, October 20. Switzerland follows on October 31. Bangladesh trails well behind, at year's end.
Students should verify every opportunity through official channels rather than relying on scholarship posts circulating on social media. Eligibility requirements, mandatory tests, funding arrangements and application procedures differ considerably from one programme to another. Transcripts, research proposals and reference letters can also take time to assemble, while the deadlines aren't moving.
The opportunities are there: 56 HEC nomination slots for the Commonwealth programme, four seats at BUP and a separate Swiss scholarship window. For applicants who meet the academic bar, the first test is much simpler: getting every document onto the right platform before the clock runs out.
