STOCKHOLM: The global streaming leader, Spotify, plans to roll out a special “AI Persona” badge in the middle of September. The new badge is intended to help users easily distinguish AI-generated profiles on the platform from those created by actual individuals, resolving one of the biggest issues affecting listeners’ satisfaction with music services worldwide. The emergence of numerous artist personas, which are AI-generated and not actual persons, appears to have caused frustration among Spotify users.

In explaining the rationale for launching this badge, Spotify stated, "Our community has made it clear that they do not appreciate being led to believe that an artist page portrays someone human when it is actually created using AI."

This statement indicates that this feedback directly influenced Spotify’s decision to launch such a badge. Prior to this decision, there was no labelling system to distinguish artist profiles generated using AI.

Spotify AI Persona badge is a Part of a Broader Transparency Push

Spotify has introduced the "AI Persona" badge on its application platform as part of its efforts to enhance transparency regarding the creation process behind songs featured on its app. This move comes against the backdrop of rising concerns within the broader music ecosystem regarding an abundance of AI-generated music overwhelming the streaming catalogue.

With advances in AI technology making AI music generators more prevalent among artists today, there is immense pressure on platforms such as Spotify to allow consumers to differentiate between real-life human artists and virtual AI-generated personas.

This is not the first step taken by Spotify towards enhancing authenticity on its platform. Back in April, the music streaming platform introduced an ‘authenticity’ indicator named "Verified by Spotify," confirming whether a user profile has met the necessary requirements for authenticity set by Spotify.

Spotify is soon going to roll out another similar badge for profiles featuring AI-generated personas, known as the AI Persona badge, in order to allow users to understand the authenticity of content available on its app.

"Besides the Artist Profiles that have openly declared themselves to be AI Personas, we will begin adding labels to certain other profiles too," the firm stated, hinting that their labeling system is not going to be fully dependent on the self-disclosure done by the artists concerned or the creators of AI-generated profiles. The move indicates that Spotify intends to actively engage in the identification and labeling process of AI-generated content within its platform.

Spotify has announced that AI Personas will not be used in either editorial or personalisation recommendations unless a user subscribes to them. It indicates that the Spotify AI Persona Badge Program goes beyond just being labelled and will limit where AI-generated content can be found within the Spotify ecosystem unless the user opts in for those recommendations themselves.

In light of ongoing issues facing streaming companies due to the emergence of AI-generated material, Spotify may soon pave the way for other major players through its launch of an "AI Persona" badge, which could become an industry norm.

Spotify launched the "AI Persona" badge in response to concerns across the industry regarding the risk of AI content overshadowing human artists on streaming platforms, posing risks for listener engagement.

Such initiatives will likely become increasingly important within the industry, especially after seeing the growth in AI-generated music during recent months.
