From Careem to Engro: Junaid Iqbal Named CEO-Designate of Pakistan’s Corporate Giant

KARACHI: Engro Corporation Limited is changing leaders again, and this time the transition is starting well before the incumbent's term runs out. The board of directors approved the appointment of Junaid Iqbal as "President & CEO – Designate" of Engro Corporation, the company's parent, Engro Holdings Limited, disclosed in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Ahsan Zafar Syed, the current President & CEO, will keep his job until his term ends.
The move continues a pattern that has defined Engro Corporation's top office for more than a decade: relatively short tenures followed by carefully staged handovers. Syed himself only assumed the CEO post in April 2024, following Ghias Khan's seven-year run. He had spent over three decades at the company, starting as an engineer with what was then Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited, and led the construction of the $1.1 billion EnVen urea plant before running Engro Fertilizers and later Engro Energy, where he oversaw Thar coal projects worth close to $1.9 billion combined.

Here's the part that stands out. Syed has run the company for barely two and a half years, nowhere near Khan's seven-year stretch, and shorter than Subhani's tenure before that. Nothing in the Engro Holdings letter explains why the board chose this particular moment to name a successor. It simply states the decision and moves on. Whether that reflects routine planning or something the company hasn't disclosed, the filing itself offers no clue either way.
Engro Holdings thanked Syed for what it called his "outstanding leadership and valuable contributions to the Engro Group" and said it looks forward to Iqbal "advancing the Group's strategic priorities and continued growth."
Engro Corporation runs fertilizer plants, coal-fired power generation in Thar, petrochemical operations, and food processing under one roof and its CEO sets direction across all of it. The parent company, Engro Holdings, was itself known as Dawood Hercules Corporation until recently and sits atop one of Pakistan's largest business groups. So when the letter instructs the exchange to notify TRE certificate holders, it's not a formality. Those certificate holders, and the wider investor base, now have a name without a resume to go with it.
