ISLAMABAD: Kia pulled its entry-level Picanto off the market in Pakistan this month, and the silence that followed didn't last long. Automotive analyst Suneel Munj says Lucky Motor Corporation is lining up a next-generation Picanto for launch within weeks, turning what looked like an exit into a quiet reset.

Lucky Motor has reportedly ended bookings for the outgoing Picanto and scrubbed it from Kia Pakistan's website, closing out a run that started in September 2019. For six years, the 998cc hatchback held its ground as Kia's most accessible car in a market Suzuki has dominated for decades through the Cultus and Wagon R. Losing that entry point, even briefly, leaves Kia without a true budget hatchback in its local lineup for the first time since the Picanto's debut.

New Kia Picanto

Munj, who posted the update on X, described the discontinuation as a model transition rather than the end of the Picanto nameplate in Pakistan. Lucky Motor itself hasn't confirmed a launch window, pricing, specifications, or whether the new model will roll off a local assembly line or arrive as an import — leaving buyers with a name but no numbers.

Every week without a Picanto replacement gives rival hatchbacks more room to capture buyers shopping at the lower end of Pakistan's new-car market. The outgoing Picanto built part of its case around safety and convenience equipment including airbags, ABS and ISOFIX child-seat mounts, carrying an ex-factory price near PKR 4.09 million. That's the argument Kia will need the new Picanto to make again if it wants to hold ground against Suzuki's hatchbacks and the wider mix of new and used vehicles buyers cross-shop at that price point.

What a relaunch would actually mean for Kia

Kia's Pakistan operation runs through a partnership with Lucky Cement, part of the Yunus Brothers Group, which restarted Kia's local presence in 2016. Retaining the Picanto would allow Kia to maintain a presence in Pakistan's small-hatchback segment, while a newer model could give Lucky Motor an opportunity to reposition the nameplate after six years in the market.

What buyers actually know right now

Strip away the speculation and the confirmed facts are thin: bookings for the old Picanto have reportedly closed, a new one is said to be coming within a month, and Lucky Motor has said nothing official about price, specs, or assembly status. Prospective buyers eyeing Kia's hatchback segment are, for now, working entirely off industry chatter a position that will hold until Lucky Motor breaks its silence with an actual announcement.
