The EV infrastructure of Pakistan is about to witness a massive upliftment as one of the leading companies from China makes its foray into the country via a new strategic alliance. The company called StarCharge, StarCharge Energy Pakistan, and Bahum Global Ltd have inked an MoU for the purpose of setting up the EV ecosystem in Pakistan.

Details of the Landmark Agreement

This Chinese EV leader’s move into the Pakistani market is being done via an agreement inked in Islamabad that brings together foreign know-how and Pakistani industry. Under this MoU, three major pillars will be leveraged to enhance the electric mobility segment in Pakistan: international cooperation, charging station development, and industrial development.

The joint venture sets up StarCharge, which is an international EV charger technology company, alongside its local partner Bahum Global Ltd to set a footprint in Pakistan’s electric vehicle industry. This venture demonstrates increasing confidence among Chinese EV giant about the potential for electric mobility in Pakistan.

Government’s Efforts towards Electric Mobility

In his speech during the signing event, SAPM for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasized the larger picture regarding the entry of this Chinese EV behemoth into Pakistan. He mentioned that the government is actively pursuing efforts to fast-track the process of moving towards electric mobility through domestic manufacturing, attracting foreign investments, and establishing an ecosystem for EVs in the country.

Khan also pointed out the importance of the soon-to-be-launched Battery Energy Storage System Policy in this regard as it will be instrumental in enabling Pakistan’s EV industry. This particular policy, according to him, is aimed at facilitating investments in the battery sector which currently lacks development in the Pakistani industrial landscape.

Strategic Advantages for Pakistan’s Energy Security

According to Khan, there are strategic advantages of using more EVs which transcend beyond the automobile industry. The use of electric vehicles would mean that there would be less dependency on petroleum products thereby making it easier for Pakistan to deal with its import bills. At the same time, there is improved sustainability in terms of environmental conservation and energy security.

The importance of this assertion becomes clear when one considers the fact that in recent times, the cost of importing petroleum products in Pakistan has been increasing due to the instability in the international market caused by problems in the Middle East region.

Expansion of Charging Facilities across the Nation

Apart from manufacturing and technology transfer, Mr. Khan further revealed that the government was also helping in the installation of charging facilities for electric vehicles throughout the nation. This was indeed necessary for providing a more realistic and feasible approach for common people, which was indeed the major hurdle to EVs' adoption in the country.

However, the current state of charging infrastructure in Pakistan is insufficient and unevenly spread, mainly found in urban areas. The New Energy Vehicle Policy of the country has set a target to build 3,000 charging stations within the span of 10 years, and even in the present fiscal year, 240 charging stations will be built. Entry of this Chinese EV behemoth in Pakistan can help achieve that target faster.

The simple reality that one of China’s major players in the EV space is entering the Pakistani market through this MoU is indicative of a wider trend of global interest in the country’s EV sector.
