KARACHI: The Pakistan State-Owned Hutchison Ports Pakistan, the nation’s only modern deepwater container port facility, announced a major enhancement initiative worth USD 76 million for 2026 and 2027. The investments include two electrically-powered remotely operated Quay Cranes (QCs), 17 electrically-powered remotely controlled Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes (RTGCs), 70 e-trucks, and 50 trailers. To improve the overall speed of operations at the port, the company has already acquired its first set of equipment consisting of 20 e-trucks, 10 trailers, a reach stacker, and an empty handler this fiscal year.
Pakistan's Hutchison Ports embarks on yet another crucial phase of development whereby investments worth USD 690 million will be made by December 2026. This phase of development is geared towards capacity enhancement and improving operational efficiencies while positioning itself as one of the top marine gateways in the region.
As of October 2023, the cumulative expenditure under this modernization drive stood at approximately USD 300 million. Apart from contributing to commercial success, this move will help achieve sustainability goals set out by the Hutchison Ports Group and contribute to sustainable development in Pakistan.
"Our continuous investment reflects our unwavering commitment to Pakistan’s economic growth and maritime leadership," said CS Kim, CEO of Hutchison Ports Pakistan. "Working hand-in-hand with MOMA, KPT, and the Government, we are fully focused on turning the Prime Minister’s vision to establish Pakistan as a premier transshipment hub into a reality. By deploying cutting-edge technology, we are enabling faster turnaround times, optimizing cargo clearance, and unlocking long-term economic value for the nation."

As part of the broader Hutchison Ports Pakistan upgrade program, the terminal has submitted a proposal to the Government of Pakistan to secure additional land for the implementation of a Centralized Examination Area. This initiative directly supports the maritime agenda of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs (MOMA), Karachi Port Trust (KPT), and the Government of Pakistan to build a high-capacity logistics hub that optimizes trade efficiency and drives regional commercial activity.
