Pakistan and Norway Set to Strengthen BilateralTies

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Norway's bilateral ties took yet another leap forward when Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide visited Islamabad on Thursday for an official two-day trip. According to reports, the foreign minister will be meeting with his Pakistani counterpart to discuss various aspects of cooperation, including trade, investments, climate, renewable energy, and education.

The visit was officially announced via an announcement issued by the Foreign Office, according to which, "Following his invitation by the Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister (DPM/FM), Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Espen Barth Eide, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway, will pay an official visit to Pakistan on August 13-14, 2026. This will be the first visit made by a Foreign Minister from Norway after ten long years." It appears to highlight the importance attached to this renewed diplomatic engagement effort by both sides.

The discussions between the DPM/FM and his/her Norwegian counterpart will cover the entire range of Pakistan-Norway ties, according to officials' statements ahead of the trip.

Both delegations will be able to examine opportunities for enhanced engagement across the board – especially trade and investments, climate change, renewable energy, education, and people-to-people contacts – as ties between Islamabad and Oslo continue to mature.

The current visit comes after months of high-level engagements between both nations. In March and April 2026, the Foreign Ministers exchanged calls twice. In May 2026, State Secretary of Norway, Mr Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, paid a visit to Islamabad. It is quite evident from these developments that this latest visit is part of an ongoing process of diplomacy rather than being an ad hoc development.

As per officials’ claims, the upcoming visit will allow both countries to strengthen existing warm relations between Pakistan and Norway, and explore new avenues of collaboration. Based on the current dynamics of Pakistan Norway relations after this visit, both sides seem eager to venture out into newer realms of cooperation, especially those related to renewables and climate change, where Norway boasts significant international experience.

In an update issued by the Office of Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the senator held another meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss Pakistan’s upcoming diplomatic engagements. This meeting involved discussions regarding Pakistan’s preparations for hosting the visit of Norway’s Foreign Minister.

Pakistan also took note of other diplomatic engagements that included the region and international level events affecting the country’s foreign policy agenda.

During his conversation with Prime Minister Khan, the FM reiterated the need for proper coordination and preparation ahead of all upcoming diplomatic visits to make sure that there are substantive results achieved after such high-profile missions, indicating a new strategic plan that Pakistan will adopt for future high-level visits.

Ambassador Amna Baloch, the Foreign Secretary, along with other relevant ministry officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the preparatory session, indicating the importance attached to the upcoming visit. During the next two days' engagements between Pakistan and Norway in Islamabad, both countries may be looking forward to converting these high-level talks into actionable plans of cooperation in those key fields of mutual interest.
