KARACHI: Mitsubishi Motors have finally announced that the legendary Pajero nameplate has returned. After many rumors and speculations, the Pajero name is back and ready to give the best performance ever as it returns for another ride on the roads.

As per the announcement made by the company, the brand new crossover SUV from Mitsubishi Motors will carry the highly regarded brand identity name ‘Pajero’ and will come into the market in autumn 2026. It marks the first announcement concerning the revival of the brand in the international market, where it was discontinued in 2021.

It is also very important in the context of Pakistani automobile sector because the Mitsubishi Pajero has gained legendary status in the country and has become one of the most respected models of vehicles used for off-road purposes.

Mitsubishi Officially Confirms Pajero Comeback

Verifying the development plans, Mitsubishi Motors revealed that the latest Pajero is set for launch as a cross-country SUV and would be built on the tough ladder frame construction of Mitsubishi Triton pickup.

As per reports from the Japanese automaker, the forthcoming model will offer dedicated cabin design along with a modified front and rear suspension setup in order to ensure off-road performance and passenger-car comfort.

The statement revealed that the new Pajero would be designed to reflect the adventure spirit typical of Mitsubishi cars, but at the same time, it will be sophisticated and sturdy. The announcement brought an end to several months of speculations by the automotive industry regarding the release of the new vehicle.

A Nameplate With Global Heritage

The Mitsubishi Pajero was introduced way back in 1982, and it immediately became one of the bestselling SUVs. Some estimates put the number of Pajero sold to date above 3.25 million cars worldwide in more than 170 nations.

Later on, it gained fame through automobile racing competitions around the globe, particularly in the Dakar Rally competition, where the Pajero bagged 12 out of 13 consecutive titles, a record that greatly contributed to the vehicle being recognized as one of the finest off-roaders in the world. This was due to the fact that it was the ruggedness, strength, and superior comfort of the Pajero that made it supreme among other SUV models.

Pajero’s Enduring Legacy in Pakistan

However, the impact of the Pajero in Pakistan proved even more interesting despite its success globally. The Pajero succeeded in making its mark in the early 90’s and early part of the 21st century because of its prestige and off-road capabilities. This was accomplished by importing this car from Japan and elsewhere through the medium of used cars.

The Pajero became popular in Pakistan not only because of its reliability but also its ability to endure some of the harshest road conditions in the country, such as the rocky trails of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to the rugged areas of Baluchistan and even the deserts of Sindh. Years after production had ceased elsewhere around the globe, there were still thousands of Pajeros being used in Pakistan.

Car lovers also consider the second generation and third generation Pajero series to be among the best SUVs ever offered in the country. It has also been one of the most important automobiles to promote the luxury four-wheel drive culture in Pakistan years before other SUVs became available.

New Pajero Expected to Revive Mitsubishi’s SUV Presence

One of Mitsubishi’s most crucial product decisions of late according to industry analysts has been the comeback of their Pajero. The SUV market in the world has experienced rising demand for robust body-on-frame models that can manage to blend practical family utility with off-road prowess.

Mitsubishi has dared to venture into what can be termed a highly competitive market sector with cars such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Ford Everest, Toyota Fortuner, amongst others, which include new off-roaders.

Though there is no indication on the features, specifications, pricing, or launch date, the company has clearly stated that this vehicle will be launched as their flagship vehicle.

Potential Interest in Pakistan

Official confirmation of the company’s plans has created a great deal of buzz in Pakistan, especially among those who consider Pajero to be one of the best SUVs that have ever been launched in this country.

Although Mitsubishi has yet to make any moves in relation to Pakistan, its resurgence is expected to bring a lot of interest from SUV enthusiasts and off-roaders in Pakistan. Considering the popularity and the legacy of the vehicle in Pakistan, it can be said that its resurgence will certainly catch everyone’s eye when it comes officially or via imports in the near future.

The Pajero is much more than just an SUV for most Pakistanis, and for some, it was the time when the technology used in the Japanese vehicles was setting standards globally.

As Mitsubishi has confirmed its arrival, the name that boasts an incredible legacy in the history of sports utility vehicles is set to make its big comeback on the international scene.

Focus Pakistan has learned from Mitsubishi Motors’ official announcement that the all-new Pajero will make its world premiere in Autumn 2026, marking the official return of the legendary SUV after a five-year absence from global markets.
