DELHI: India-based actor Rajpal Yadav has been awarded a jail term in a cheque bounce case that has been following him for more than 16 years. He was awarded a jail term of three months in each of seven cases that have been filed against him by the Delhi High Court, in addition to the imposition of a penalty of INR 10.5 million in each case and INR 25,000 to the government.
In the Rajpal Yadav jail cheque bounce case verdict, it can be considered as one of the biggest legal verdicts against any Indian film actor in terms of money matters. The Delhi High Court gave two months’ time to Yadav for filing his appeal.
But Yadav has already paid INR 22.5 million, which is the amount that will be deducted from the ordered amount. But the Delhi High Court warned clearly that non-payment of the whole ordered amount will mean that he will get six more months of jail time along with the three months that he already got.
How a Loan Taken for a Film Translated into an 16-Year-long Legal Battle
The legal case of the cheque bounce incident involving Rajpal Yadav can be dated back to 2010, whereby Murli Projects Private Limited gave an INR 50 million loan to the actor towards filming of the movie Ata Pata Laapata. The movie flopped at the box office and as such, the actor was not able to repay the loan taken.
The cheque bouncing cases that ensued were the legal aftermath of such default. In August 2024, Yadav’s property was seized due to the nonpayment – an extreme measure to show how serious his debt had become. In February 2026, Yadav had to spend some days in jail but managed to obtain temporary relief by making a down payment.

State of the Case
The Rajpal Yadav jail cheque bounce case is still under appeal, with the window of two months granted by the Delhi High Court still open. Should Rajpal Yadav decide to appeal the decision, the case will be heard via the Indian appeals system.
The actor is presented with a straightforward dilemma: either pay the complete amount that was ordered, minus the already paid INR22.5 million, or decide to appeal the judgment. Not doing either of these things will result in the six additional months of jail time, as warned by the court.
From a film that failed to make a splash in 2010 to the current situation the Rajpal Yadav jail cheque bounce case is still ongoing after years and several other incidents in between.
