• Ethiopian Airlines Lahore flights are set to transform Pakistan–Africa connectivity by enabling direct travel, faster trade, and stronger business collaboration.

ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopian Airlines (ET) is making preparations to begin direct flights to Lahore (LHE) in an effort that promises to change economic connections between South Asia and Africa by circumventing transit airports, resulting in significantly reduced flight times and creating a huge trade boom for the two countries.

According to Dr. Oumer Hussein Oba, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Pakistan, ET is preparing a new Addis Ababa (ADD) to Lahore route.

Ethiopian Airlines Lahore Flights Boost Trade

This initiative comes in light of a larger diplomatic effort that seeks to align the industrial base of Pakistan with the developing markets of Africa. To achieve this, the Commerce Minister has suggested holding a multinational business conference in Islamabad. This conference will involve the East African countries visiting Pakistan to discover its varied industrial base, establishing it as an important supplier to Africa.

SME Power and Engineering Exports

Pakistan’s Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector remains the backbone of this potential trade surge. Local manufacturers excel in producing:

  • High-end home appliances and electronic products.
  • Precision agricultural machines and engineering equipment.
  • Modern tractor production plants.

The Minister explained that Pakistan’s ability to produce tractors could help realize Africa’s dreams of mechanizing agriculture and ensuring food security. This will happen by exporting such technology to Africa.

An Emerging Market for Cosmetics

In the past five years, the market of cosmetics/personal care in Pakistan has experienced tremendous growth. Understanding this phenomenon, both countries have begun to consider collaboration in fragrances and personal care products, among others. This collaboration aims to create strong value chains for the growing demand from consumers in the two countries.

The Sialkot Industrial Model

Ambassador Oba expressed keen interest in the Sialkot model a unique example of private-sector-led development. Sialkot currently dominates global markets in:

  • Sports Goods: Including world-class footballs.
  • Medical Surgical Instruments
  • Leather & Footwear Products

It is a source of inspiration for Africans who wish to have their own international airports that the business people of Sialkot constructed their own international airport called SKT.

Redefining Logistics and Tourism

Apart from flights, there is another form of logistics that both countries plan to develop: maritime efficiency. Presently, cargo travels via third country ports such as Jebel Ali and takes about 12 days. With the creation of direct links using feeder vessels, transit can be reduced to 2-3 days. Such efficiency turns Karachi into an important point to receive goods from Africa to transport them to Central Asia.

Tourism also represents a "sleeping giant." Whereas Ethiopia boasts of its incredible natural scenery, there is still room left for Pakistan as well. In order to maintain the interest, Ethiopia will organize a Single Country Exhibition in Islamabad in the coming months to promote itself as a destination for investment and product promotion.

Both countries have been looking ahead to reach this important juncture where they will be able to create a strong and sustainable relationship between them, starting from a simple flight to Lahore.
