The name of Pakistan’s maiden moon rover Jinnah-1was announced officially on Thursday by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco). It represents Pakistan’s maiden venture into exploring outer space. The country will launch its lunar rover as part of a joint project with the UAE in early 2026.

The rover is set to launch to the Moon in 2029 through China’s Chang'e-8 mission, which will involve conducting experiments on the Moon’s south pole, according to information provided by Suparco. In this collaboration, Pakistan’s first ever rover named Jinnah-1 would be launched in what is considered the most high-profile international lunar mission taking place today.
Pakistan is set to play an active role in one of the biggest global space endeavors being conducted in our time. The collaboration comes after several years of planning and negotiations between both countries’ respective space agencies.
South Pole of the Moon presents difficult topography but enormous opportunities for groundbreaking discoveries, which makes it an attractive destination for many space organizations across the globe. The involvement of Jinnah-1 mission in exploring this region puts it among several international missions competing to make discoveries from one of the least explored regions of the Moon.
At an event held in Islamabad, it was disclosed by SUPARCO that the chosen name for Pakistan’s first-ever lunar rover is Jinnah-1 among 4,000 entries received in a nationwide naming competition.
Citizens throughout Pakistan participated in the competition and provided suggestions for a name for the maiden lunar rover. This level of participation indicates immense public engagement and pride associated with the country’s initial foray into space exploration with its own lunar rover.

As announced in a statement issued by Suparco, seven contestants had suggested the name "Jinnah-1." The winning name was chosen randomly. The lucky contestant turned out to be 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar, who won the contest for suggesting the name "Jinnah-1." This gave an ordinary young person the honor to connect himself directly with such a historic achievement in Pakistan's space sector.
The mission is named after Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and represents Pakistan’s "resolve, progress, and future space frontiers," according to the chairman of SUPARCO. The decision was made with the intention of associating the founder of Pakistan with the nation’s first journey towards moon exploration.
The inaugural Pakistani lunar rover Jinnah-1 would conduct plasma and radiation studies along with analyzing the geological makeup of the Moon. It will perform important experiments for future lunar missions and studies on whether humans can survive on the moon. The objective makes Jinnah-1 an important scientific asset to China’s Chang’e-8 mission rather than an ornamental addition.
The joint venture represents a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s space program, as “the indigenous rover developed by Suparco would be part of the project to explore the lunar surface,” stated the space agency. The use of the term “indigenous rover” highlights Pakistan’s technological contribution to this mission, rather than being merely a participant in this collaborative effort.
Pakistan entered into the realm of moon exploration when there was already mounting international interest in exploring the south pole of the moon. NASA is planning to launch its fourth Artemis mission in 2028 to conduct the first ever manned mission in the area, ahead of China's own Chang'e-8 mission expected to be carried out in the same period.
India made its third attempt at the Moon and became successful when Chandrayaan-3 successfully touched down close to the lunar south pole on August 23, 2023. The mission arrived only days after Russia lost its lander, Luna-25, in the very vicinity and about four years since India’s second mission ended up failing right before touchdown. In the context of these developments, Pakistan launched its first-ever moon rover, Jinnah-1, into an arena that already witnessed success and failure of multiple missions by other leading countries.
