Pakistan Establishes First Centre for Industrial Innovation and AI at NUTECH

ISLAMABAD: The establishment of Pakistan’s first ever “Centre for Industrial Innovation and Artificial Intelligence” at NUTECH marks a very significant milestone as far as the development of AI research facilities in Pakistan is concerned as this would mark NUTECH as the focal point for AI applications within an industrial setup in the country. This development of Pakistan AI industrial innovation centre at NUTECH is considered the most tangible effort made by the country for developing an institutionalized link between academic and industrial AI in Pakistan.
As Pakistan’s industrial sector struggles with increasing pressure to be more productive, cut down costs, and compete globally where automated manufacturing processes and process optimization using artificial intelligence are fast becoming the basic requirements of competition, the center comes along.
The integration of research, integration, production, automation, and training within one institution framework represents the key feature of the Pakistan AI industrial innovation centre NUTECH design. In the case of previous technology projects in Pakistan, there were attempts to integrate these aspects individually, which resulted in the generation of research which was irrelevant to the industry or training programs which did not reflect the needs of production process.
The Pakistan AI industrial innovation centre NUTECH project aims at addressing one of the biggest issues in the country related to industrial development. It is a long-standing issue of disconnect between research in universities and the actual needs of industries in Pakistan.
Pakistan has always struggled with lack of access to the latest research in manufacturing industries, while the universities of Pakistan have been carrying out their own research which has never found its way into the industries in any productive manner. The centre has a very clear mission of developing cooperation between the academia and industries.
With regards to Pakistan's industrial sector, NUTECH is an institution that provides access to AI knowledge and technologies that cannot be afforded by most individual manufacturing enterprises to create for themselves. With the existence of such a national institution, this level of technological know-how is provided on a large-scale basis, and thus can be accessed by small and medium-scale manufacturers in the same way as multinational companies.

Why AI industrial innovation centre NUTECH is the Perfect Host Institution for this Facility
Firstly, the selection of the National University of Technology as the host institution for the Pakistan AI industrial innovation center NUTECH is due to the fact that the institution already possesses an orientation towards technical training and has connections in the fields of engineering and manufacturing in Pakistan.
Unlike other research-oriented universities, the identity of NUTECH as an institution is based on linking technical education with the application of knowledge in practice. This makes NUTECH an ideal base for a facility that is meant to unite academic research with the work of the manufacturing sector.
The NUTECH Pakistan AI industrial innovation center launch falls into a larger context of increased investments being made by Pakistan in AI technologies and digital technology more broadly in 2026:
Google Gemini Sindh AI training: members of the cabinet and 20,000 students obtaining Google AI certification
NHS-LUMS AI for health program: use of AI in improving maternal and child health
National Wastewater Genomics Dashboard: AI-driven pathogen monitoring
Punjab health census: 94.3 million citizen health records digitized
HEC STEM Careers Program: creation of world-class science graduates
NUTECH, the Pakistan AI industrial innovation center, brings manufacturing and industrial automation into this list of capabilities, making sure that the capability-building process of AI in Pakistan is not limited to governmental and academic purposes but actually enters the realm of productivity.
The technical training capabilities of the Pakistan AI industrial innovation center known as NUTECH are meant to solve a problem that each Pakistani industry-based AI initiative faces – that of the lack of people who can design, install, operate, and maintain industrial automation systems based on artificial intelligence technology.
The Pakistani industrial labor force is large, but most of its members are skilled in conventional methods of manufacturing operations. The process of moving toward automated and artificial intelligence-based manufacturing, quality control, prediction of machine malfunctions, and intelligent logistics systems is very different and requires specific training, which the NUTECH center is able to provide.
Constructing such a workforce pipeline will take time. However, creating the NUTECH Pakistan Artificial Intelligence Industrial Innovation Centre as the institutional pillar to this workforce pipeline will build the structure through which the industrial artificial intelligence workforce in Pakistan will develop over the coming decade.
