LAHORE: The Punjab government has introduced the eTransit Punjab App and the T-Cash Card that enables citizens to move around within the public transport system in Punjab province without money, waiting lines, and tickets. The Punjab eTransit App T-Cash Card launch has been brought into existence by the collaboration of the Punjab Information Technology Board, Punjab Transport Department, and Punjab Mass Transit Authority.

Faisal Yousaf, Chairman of the PITB, described this as an important step towards digitization of the transport system in Punjab:

"We want to ensure that our citizens get a safe, easy, and modern mode of travel through technology. PITB will always be ready to introduce such modern technological initiatives in order to make public services more efficient and citizen-centric."

Both systems use the same mode of transportation and fare system, which removes any complications caused by requiring riders to have exact change, to buy tokens, or to use a different payment system depending on the route chosen. This can be done through a T-Cash card or T-Cash mobile application.

What Changes for Commuters

The Punjab eTransit App T-Cash Card introduces the following benefits straightaway for commuters' routine:

• No need for cash: the need to have exact cash on board and exchange physical tokens is no more as the system automatically deducts the fare from the card or the app.

• No waiting in queues: traditionally, the process of buying tokens used to cause traffic especially during peak times at the metro bus stops. Cashless payment now allows to use the entry gates without waiting at counters.

• Multiple means of service: commuters can use both metro buses and electric buses from the same account as the public transport in Punjab continues its development.

In discussing the launch of the Punjab eTransit App T-Cash Card, Chairman Yousaf referred to a wider vision of digital governance which goes well beyond the realm of transport:

"This will not only make life easier for thousands of our citizens on a day-to-day basis but will also help in promoting digital payments and improved service delivery in the area of smart governance."

Launch of the Punjab eTransit App and T-Cash Cards is part of a continuous trend of digitization of services that the Punjab government has introduced in 2026, which includes the training of cabinet ministers in Google Gemini AI, 20,000 Google Career Certificates scholarships, digitization of the Punjab health census that covers 94.3 million citizen profiles, and WASA sewerage machinery digitization.

In essence, each strategy transforms a manual, cash-based, or paper-based process into an electronic and information-gathering process that constitutes the basis for what the Punjab government calls “smart governance.”

With the unveiling of the Punjab eTransit app and T-Cash card, public transport has become another industry in which Pakistani consumers have begun using digital payment solutions instead of cash, which was traditionally used in the ever-growing number of sectors where consumers could conduct their transactions through digital means instead of paying cash. In Q3 FY26, the total number of digital payment transactions in Pakistan amounted to 3.7 billion, increasing by 41 percent quarter-on-quarter among merchants that used QR codes for payments.

The government of Punjab has come up with a digital payment system, which includes metro buses and electric buses. The Punjab government introduces digital payments to the millions of commuters using the means of transportation in the Punjab cities of Lahore and others, thus helping them adopt digital payments in their daily life even though they might not have adopted digital payments for any other purposes before.
