China's AI Weather System MAZU Now Helps Pakistan Beat Deadly Floods

SHANGHAI: China closed out its 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference with a pledge that has little to do with chatbots or chips. Over the next five years, Beijing plans to help 30 countries run MAZU, an AI-powered weather warning system already protecting communities from floods, storms, and droughts Pakistan included.
Most AI headlines chase frontier models and processing power. This announcement points somewhere else entirely: helping villages and cities see disaster coming before it arrives.
MAZU isn't a single forecasting model. The China Meteorologicall Administration built it as a full operational system satellite feeds from the Fengyun network, cloud computing, AI forecasting, and impact analysis, all running together. It doesn't just predict how hard the wind will blow or how much rain will fall. It tries to work out what that rain does to a power grid, a runway, a wheat field, before any of it happens.

The name carries weight in Chinese coastal tradition. Fishermen along China's southeastern shore have called on Mazu, a guardian believed to protect sailors from storms, for centuries. The acronym behind the name spells out the platform's job: Multi-hazard, Alert, Zero-gap, Universal.

Pakistan sits among the countries where MAZU already runs, alongside Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Jordan, Djibouti, and the Solomon Islands. Pakistani meteorologists didn't just adopt a Chinese product off the shelf they built specialized tools with Chinese counterparts, feeding the country's own radar and satellite data into the system to track the threats that matter most here: glacial lake outburst floods, monsoon rainfall, sudden storms.
Other countries have shaped the platform around their own emergencies. Jordan runs it in Arabic. Djibouti uses it to protect ports. Mongolia leans on it for sandstorm tracking. Ethiopia has stretched it to cover farming, river systems, and air travel. More than 40 countries now tap into MAZU's cloud tools in some form.
Pan Jinjun, the CMA's chief engineer, told reporters that artificial intelligence has become central to forecasting and warning for dangerous weather. He also flagged what's still missing: not enough real-world data on extreme events, and forecasting models that need to prove themselves more reliable before agencies can lean on them completely during a real crisis.
China isn't only exporting software. Close to 1,000 meteorological professionals from over 100 developing countries have gone through CMA training programs in recent years, and a new MAZU Scholarship, launched in June, targets specialists from Belt and Road partner nations working on early warning systems.
The system now runs on a menu format agencies can pick satellite products, AI models, and monitoring tools based on what they actually need, drawing from more than 100 active cooperation projects worldwide.
For Pakistan, where floods and storms return almost every year, the pitch is straightforward: an early warning that lands in time isn't a luxury. As extreme weather keeps intensifying worldwide, the countries lining up for MAZU aren't chasing smarter forecasts alone they're racing to get the warning out before the disaster does.
