PICT Unveils Big Expansion Plan Beyond Container Terminal Business

KARACHI: Pakistan International Container Terminal Limited (PICT) is betting its future on logistics, expanding beyond container terminal operations in a strategic move that could reshape its long-term growth story.
According to the announcement, PICT has entered into a logistics services business involving container delivery from terminals, transport, cargo handling at the terminal, and last-mile delivery to end customers. The PICT logistics business move marks a shift beyond the company's core container terminal operations.
PICT Expansion
PICT framed the move as a natural extension of capabilities it already has. The company said the new business draws directly on its existing operational expertise, infrastructure, industry knowledge and customer relationships assets built over years of running container terminal operations at Karachi's port. As opposed to venturing into an unknown sector, PICT seems to be viewing the logistics expansion as a natural progression for a business that already has experience in container handling, and one which fits well into Pakistan’s rapidly growing logistics industry.

The revelation may indicate that PICT may at some point start operations in dry ports as well, but the firm did not provide any timeframe for this move. Dry ports are basically logistics centers located inland and facilitate cargo handling and customs clearance processes without the need to send all the cargo via seaports.
The company was careful to temper expectations around near-term financial impact. PICT told the PSX the business's effect on its bottom line will stay limited for now, and will depend entirely on how the operation develops and what volume of business it eventually attracts. That's a standard caveat for early-stage business lines, but it also signals PICT isn't promising investors an immediate earnings boost from the pivot.

PICT committed to keeping shareholders updated as the container logistics business develops, and asked the PSX to inform TREC holders the exchange's trading rights entitlement certificate holders of the disclosure.
This filing is coming at a time when Pakistan’s logistics industry is under increasing pressure to upgrade their supply chains and reduce the delays which have been associated with the transport of containers from the port to the final destination. Businesses which can provide end-to-end logistics services have the potential to benefit from the current fragmentation in the market.
Whether PICT's entry into integrated logistics and eventual dry ports management translates into meaningful revenue will likely take several quarters to show up in the company's financial disclosures. For now, the PSX filing establishes the strategic direction without committing the company to a specific timeline or investment figure.
