New Rabies Detection Method Developed at Indus Hospital in Karachi

Share This Article:

KARACHI: Researchers in medicine at the Indus Hospital have come up with an innovative diagnostic procedure which will facilitate the early detection of rabies infection in dog bite cases.

The health officials claimed that the technique allows the identification of rabies virus’ RNA through wounds that have been swabbed. This will help identify whether there has been any exposure to the disease during its early stages. Timely intervention in such cases is important since it is vital for preventing the spread of the disease.

Study conducted on 100 bite cases

The study was carried out in the Rabies Prevention Center of the hospital. Samples were taken from 100 patients suffering from bite wounds caused by dogs.

It was discovered that there was a presence of rabies RNA in the wounds. This shows that rabies can be diagnosed at the time of injury even without clinical manifestations.

Speeding up screening increases the effectiveness of the treatment

According to the medical community, the newly developed process serves as an easier and non-invasive way compared to the standard diagnostic techniques used. It helps in conducting early screening in areas where laboratories are not highly developed.

The importance of detecting the exposure at an early stage is that the health professionals are able to start post-exposure prophylaxis right away, thus slowing down the disease process and improving the likelihood of recovery.

Improvement in public health surveillance

Experts stated that the method would be useful in conducting wider disease surveillance programs since it provides early evidence of virus presence in animal hosts within the community. Data collected from the bitten individuals could be used to quantify the level of infection amongst the stray dogs.

This information could be utilized by the public health departments for devising proper strategies for vaccinating people and controlling stray animals. This technology is beneficial for surveillance in both urban and rural areas.

Incidence rise raises fear in Karachi

As per the health professionals, the cause of this was the rise in reports of incidents involving attacks by animals in the city of Karachi.

It was advised by doctors to seek medical help immediately following the biting of an animal, and it was emphasized that the best way to prevent infection caused by the rabies virus is through vaccination.

Leadership of research at Indus Hospital

Indus Hospital experts, including Dr. Naseem Salahuddin, participated in the design of the diagnostic technique. It was observed that there was an increase in the number of rabies infections, and new techniques for rapid diagnosis had to be developed.

The hospital is still endeavoring towards refining its clinical protocol and prevention program in an attempt to bring down mortality caused by rabies in Pakistan.

Improving disease control and monitoring

Considering the input from health experts regarding the new test, its implementation will facilitate better control of the diseases due to the ease with which it will be possible to detect the diseases.

Scientists said the technique may help them understand virus transmission dynamics better, which can support the development of future immunization campaigns and prevention strategies.

Progress made towards diagnosis of infectious diseases

The scientific community received this development as a major milestone in the field of infectious disease diagnostics. The direct diagnosis of rabies from injuries will contribute towards improving diagnostic accuracy without depending on advanced laboratory equipment.

According to health specialists, the invention had the potential to enhance treatment results, boost monitoring programs, and aid the elimination of rabies in dangerous areas.
