ISLAMABAD: To celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, the United States Embassy in Islamabad and the US Consulate General in Lahore lit up some of the most famous sites in Pakistan in the colors red, white, and blue for five days, starting from July 1 to July 5, 2026. The US Pakistan Freedom 250 was held in close cooperation with the Government of Pakistan as the two countries’ friendship is now moving toward being more meaningful and productive.

National Monument and Lahore Fort Become Central to Celebrations

At Islamabad, the National Monument of Pakistan was illuminated in the colours of the United States of America for five days in a row, while Globe Chowk in Constitution Avenue was lit up in the same manner through all the celebrations. These sites were illuminated in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan and the Capital Development Authority, which shows that the Government of Pakistan actually supported US-Pakistan Freedom 250 project.

The same was true of Lahore, where the scale was on par with the vision. The U.S. Mission worked on lightings at the Alamgiri Gate and the Picture Wall of the Lahore Fort, as well as the Quaid-e-Azam Library and the National Institute of Technology. Celebrating a democratic achievement of the United States by using a UNESCO heritage site with roots in Mughal civilization conveyed a subtle yet significant message – that the ideals of freedom and self-determination are not exclusive to any one civilization.

Lahore Fort and Quaid-e-Azam Library Participate in the Celebration

The ambit of the celebration by the US Mission in Pakistan called US Pakistan Freedom 250 was no less ambitious for Lahore either. The US Mission arranged for the lighting up of the Alamgiri Gate and Picture Wall of Lahore Fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as one of the most renowned monuments from the Mughal era. Along with the Lahore Fort, the Quaid-e-Azam Library and NIT also joined in the celebrations through their illuminated facades.

Choice of venue is especially significant in the case of Lahore Fort. The fort has been an edifice standing proud for many centuries as a symbol of civilization and its achievements. Lighting it on the occasion of 250 years of democracy in America signifies that America’s democratic experiment forms part of the much larger dialogue of humanity’s desire for freedom and self-governance.

Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker Leads the Way

US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker set the tone for the anniversary not just as a commemoration of history but as a forward looking message about where the relationship between the US and Pakistan will go in the future. According to Baker, whose country is celebrating its 250th anniversary, it is an opportunity for renewal in institutions and leadership.

Her comments regarding Pakistan had substance. Her comments on the nature of the bilateral relationship were those of a relationship which is founded upon sovereignty, power and prosperity, thus recognizing the fact that Pakistan desires to have an equal relationship rather than one which has been based upon a patron-client arrangement in the past, a fact which has often been noted to characterize perceptions of the bilateral relationship historically. Baker also noted that the two nations have managed to translate mutual respect into reality.

A World Event With Local Significance

The lighting of the cities is one of the events organized by Freedom 250, which is a year-long global initiative by the US to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signed on 4th July 1776. The campaign urges its partner countries to join the celebrations along with Americans as a joint contemplation of the values of freedom, democracy and opportunities rather than just an internal affair.

The prominent involvement of Pakistan, with the participation of not only two but several major cities and significant landmarks, represents the warmth in the present relations between the two countries and its strong basis.
