Germany to Acquire Tomahawk Missiles After US Approval

Tomahawk missiles sales to Germany have been agreed by the United States, revealed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday. It is a milestone development in terms of transatlantic defense cooperation and it came despite initial uncertainties about the possibility of moving forward with the deal.

Deal Made on the Margins of NATO Summit

According to Merz, the negotiations held in Ankara were beyond expectation. The deal was reached on the margins of the NATO summit, which took place over two days this week, Tuesday and Wednesday. “On the margins of the NATO summit in Ankara, we have also reached an agreement with the U.S. government that we will be buying and deploying American Tomahawk missiles in Germany,” declared Merz.

The fact that the US has given the green light for the sale of the Tomahawk missiles to Germany is especially significant against the backdrop of uncertainty that has surrounded the project recently. President Donald Trump previously showed his intention to scale back the US military footprint in Germany, which was generally understood as an abandonment of the previous deal with the Tomahawk-equipped battalion.

Filling a Defence Gaps Strategically

“Through this, we are filling an important gap in our strategic defence system,” Merz said in his speech to parliament. He further elaborated on how Germany will be developing its own weapons systems for Europe in addition to buying those from abroad, and how it wants to deploy them throughout Europe.

The two-pronged strategy is part of the wider European drive towards reducing dependency on American weapon systems in the long run despite their current need for securing themselves. At present, there is no comparable weapon system produced by Europe that can equal the capabilities of the Tomahawk missiles.

Letter of Intent Details

As per the sources from the German government, the United States has signed a letter of intent on Tuesday wherein the US has agreed to give a formal approval for the transaction by August. This agreement is related to the use of ground-based Typhon launchers that will be used for launching the missiles from German soil.

As far as the exact quantity of the missiles and launchers intended for purchase by Germany, it has not been revealed as the data remains classified by the German government. The range of the Tomahawk missile is 2,500 kilometers, thus the missiles launched from Germany will reach deep into Russian territory since the distance between Moscow and Berlin is 1,600 kilometers.

European Defence Environment at Larger

In addition to the story about the approval by the US for the sale of the Tomahawk missiles to Germany, there have been a number of other defence-related stories in Europe this week. One of them was about the fact that the twelve European NATO countries, among them Germany, were planning to invest $50 billion in new defence capabilities over the next ten years.

NATO countries from Europe do not have their own medium-range strike weapons today. There are several countries that have been looking for options through ELSA – the European Long-Range Strike Approach, an initiative introduced at the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington. Through ELSA, the involved nations seek to create a cruise missile with a capability of more than 2,000 kilometers in range.

Next Steps

Following the approval by the US government for the sale of the Tomahawk missiles to Germany, the focus is on the formal approval procedure which is slated to take place in August. Details about implementation, such as deployment schedule and exact numbers, will come out as the deal is finalized.
