The BYD automobile brand celebrated the manufacturing of its 17 million new energy vehicle on July 8 at its plant in Xi’an. It chose the Seal 08 which is the flagship sedan that was just recently unveiled by BYD for this milestone achievement, thereby making BYD the world’s first auto manufacturer to achieve such feat.
A Benchmark-Breaking Speed of Production
While launching its 17 millionth NEV, BYD established yet another record for the speed of bringing new energy vehicle production to a new level.
This is faster than the former records. In the past, it required 120 days for BYD to have an increase in production from the 15 millionth to 16 millionth NEVs. On November 18, 2024, BYD recorded 10 millionth and 15 millionth vehicle production within just 13 months.
Seal 08: A Flagship Model
The Seal 08 was chosen by BYD to celebrate this milestone, and the timing is quite significant, since the sedan only entered production on July 2nd. As the flagship vehicle in BYD’s Ocean range of cars, the Seal 08 comes in six different models, including both plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles, the latter costing around 196,900 yuan.
This vehicle uses some of the most recent innovations from BYD, which include the second-generation Blade Battery and flash charging capabilities for all versions. In addition, the electric vehicle version of the car offers a CLTC driving range of 905 kilometers, along with its 800-volt powertrain, which allows for quick charging of this vehicle. Lastly, this car features BYD’s “God’s Eye” autonomous driving system, which utilizes LiDAR technology for urban navigation and self-parking.

Sales Growth Worldwide
Apart from achieving this milestone, BYD launched its 17 millionth NEV amid the context of rapid expansion abroad. Total sales of vehicles reached 1,808,511 units in the first six months of the present year. From these, the sale of overseas passenger cars and trucks accounted for 789,367 units with an annual growth rate of 68%.
Such a rapid growth abroad is due to the change in business strategy of BYD. In Europe, BYD headed a pack of Chinese car producers that outperformed Japanese car brands for the first time in May.
BYD’s Seal 08: A Milestone Model for This Achievement
This time around, BYD decided to use its Seal 08 model as a way to celebrate the achievement. As the flagship model of BYD’s Ocean range, the Seal 08 will be available in six different versions, both plug-in hybrids and pure electrics, priced at about 196,900 yuan.
In terms of electric version, the vehicle has a maximum range of 905 kilometers when using CLTC cycle, while the architecture built on 800-volt provides very fast charging capabilities. In addition, the model includes BYD’s “God’s Eye” driver assistance system based on LiDAR technologies.
Implications of This Milestone for the Industry
The rapid achievement of these milestones by BYD shows how large-scale its production is and how quickly it can produce new models without affecting the manufacturing process. Analysts consider this speed as a sign of growing dominance of BYD in the EV industry on a global level, especially taking into account that BYD continues its investment in charging facilities, with plans to build 20,000 fast charging stations across the country by the end of 2026.
