CM Maryam Nawaz Launches ‘Saanjhi Sabzi’ — Free Seasonal Vegetables

LAHORE: Saanjhi Sabzi – Shared Vegetables is a public welfare program that has been launched by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz to use the wasteland owned by the government for growing vegetables for the benefit of the people of the area. The project has started in Muzaffargarh where vegetables are being grown on 140 plots occupying an area of 139 kanals of government land.

People have already been getting free vegetables based on their requirements – thus making the Punjab Saanjhi Sabzi free vegetables scheme one of the rarest instances where the people are getting benefits from the start of the project rather than later on.

The Working of the Scheme

Through the utilization of government-owned land which is not yielding any economic or social benefits at present, the scheme is able to convert the underutilized government land into an active food security measure without having to incur any cost for acquiring the land and also without any delay.

Punjab Saanjhi Sabzi Initiative – Launched in a Christian Community Village: Inclusiveness through Design

The Punjab Saanjhi Sabzi free vegetables scheme was officially launched from a village that is home to the Christian community of Muzaffargarh, Pakistan – a deliberate choice of launching site that demonstrates the inclusiveness of the scheme. Minority religious communities in rural Punjab remain one of the poorest and most neglected groups.

CM Urges Replication Across Whole Province

The CM, Mrs. Maryam Nawaz, stated that the program at Muzaffargarh was a perfect example which needs to be replicated, and asked deputy commissioners of all districts of Punjab to implement a similar scheme.

Punjab Saanjhi Sabzi Free Vegetables Scheme Directive turns the originally conceived scheme at the level of one district to become a possible scheme throughout the province – where 36 districts, along with their deputy commissioners, have to locate vacant lands of the government, plant vegetables, and start distribution.

Deputy Commissioner Muzaffargarh Muhammad Usman Tahir Jappa was appreciated by the CM for his work in the area of public welfare through the district administration at a formal meeting because it highlighted the importance of the local effort that enabled the launch of the pilot project.

Food Security on the Local Level

Punjabi free vegetables project Punjab Saanjhi Sabzi tackles the issue of food security by employing the most basic method that can be employed producing food for those who need it and handing it over to them. It is particularly important in a province where vegetable prices are high and the weekly SPI statistics indicate the disproportionate share that food prices play in domestic expenses.

“Punjabi Saanjhi Sabzi” free vegetables program is extremely helpful for Punjab’s poor families, especially those living in secondary towns and rural areas, where vegetable value chains are long, and prices are comparatively high. This program offers help that is not possible through any price control system or subsidies.”

If the province-wide effort even produces one-tenth of the level of community engagement seen in Muzaffargarh with people voluntarily growing vegetables for their neighbours, it will produce a model of civic farming that endures beyond any single political project.
