KARACHI: Pakistan IT exports are set to expand rapidly as new reforms introduced by the State Bank of Pakistan aim to increase Pakistan freelancers income and strengthen the Pakistan IT sector..
It is clear that the government is making efforts to encourage the country’s booming IT industry and freelancers, who continue to contribute significantly towards the generation of foreign exchange.
Pakistan IT Exports Get Major Boost from SBP Reforms
The SBP has eliminated a key bureaucratic hurdle by removing the requirement to submit Form “R” for every individual export transaction. The process has been simplified considerably, allowing exporters of Information Technology and freelancers to spend less time on documentation and more time on growing their businesses.
This means that the service providers, both IT firms and freelancers, will be required to furnish all information only once during the process of opening their bank accounts. This information will contain all the details about the services provided by them abroad.
In other words, Pakistan has begun moving closer to the global digital economy standards for regulating Information Technology firms and freelancers.
Fast Processing of Remittances and Payments
To make things even more efficient, the SBP has mandated that banks should process inward export remittances within 24 hours if they come into the special foreign exchange account. This will ensure that the IT companies as well as freelancers have fast access to their payments, thereby stabilizing the business.
In a similar vein, banks must process outward remittances within 24 hours of receiving payment from the customer.
Higher Threshold and Digital Transformation
The SBP has also increased the threshold for mandatory Form “R” submission to above $25,000, providing additional flexibility for smaller transactions that dominate the freelancing ecosystem.
One more important development in this regard is that the central bank has asked the financial institutions to make Forms “R” and “M” digital in nature, thereby paving the way for the digitalization of the entire compliance process.
Enhanced Complaint Redressal System
Understanding the complaints raised from time to time by the freelancing community, the SBP has made it clear that there should be a proper mechanism for the prompt redressal of complaints.
The reason behind this step is that many freelancers deal with foreign customers and therefore need an efficient bank transaction system.
A Boost for Pakistan’s Digital Economy
According to industry observers, these changes would not only help boost exports, but would also incentivize many individuals to join the ranks of the country’s freelancers. By making processes more streamlined, quickening payment processing, and introducing automation in documentation, Pakistan would become a much more attractive contender in the international digital arena.
The proactive approach adopted by the SBP indicates a larger plan towards developing a modern finance sector and supporting innovation-led industries. As these changes take effect, Pakistan’s IT industry and freelancers will reap significant rewards.
