A former officer of the CIA was arrested last week when FBI agents discovered $40 million worth of gold bars in the home of the officer in Virginia while probing the case to see if the officer had falsified information regarding his educational background and military service. The arresting of former CIA officer David Rush, a senior US government official who had top secret clearance, is one of the most astounding incidents related to the American intelligence agency.
Searches of Rush’s home were conducted by the FBI on May 18, where 303 gold bars valued at over $40 million were discovered. Additionally, they were able to confiscate $2 million worth of US dollars and 35 expensive watches.
How the Case of the CIA Official’s Gold Bars Was Resolved
From November 2025 through March 2026, Rush is said to have made several appeals to the government to get hold of millions of dollars worth of foreign currency and gold bars that were needed for professional purposes. The problem is that his employer was unable to account for the gold bars.
The CIA and the FBI issued a joint press release stating that the arrest happened on May 19th when the agency informed the bureau about it. “Following a CIA internal investigation into allegations of potentially illegal conduct, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the matter to the FBI for an investigation,” the statement noted.

Counterfeit Credentials Add to the Scandal Involving the CIA Official’s Gold Bars
It appears that the scandal involving the CIA officer’s gold bars was much more extensive than the theft itself. The federal authorities have found out that Rush had forged everything about himself, saying that he had graduated from both Clemson and RPI universities and served as a Navy test pilot.
The accusation by the FBI was that Rush had been dishonest when he joined the US Navy in 1997 since he provided transcripts and other documents showing that he had received his bachelor’s degree from Clemson University. He had been honorably discharged ten years earlier in February 2015 as a lieutenant although he said he was a decorated Navy Reserve captain and Air Force test pilot.
Detention of Rush Until His Detention Hearing
For now, the matter regarding Rush has been put on hold pending the process of collecting evidence from his counsel as well as the Federal Prosecutors to establish whether or not he ought to be remanded. The hearing date has been asked to be postponed since the one set for June 5.
Rush faced the crime of stealing public funds. According to the affidavit, it is not clear what Rush planned to do with these funds since some of them were recovered from storage units close to Rush’s office.
This arrest by the CIA of the official dealing with gold bars raises many pertinent issues as to how several hundred gold bars were spirited away from the US intelligence agency to his Virginia home through months without any suspicion being aroused — and the joint inquiry will have to find answers to these questions.
