ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, Pakistan’s Power Division released an important public alert regarding a highly advanced phishing scam involving counterfeit QR codes that could result in the theft of personal details via manipulated links for electricity bills.
“The way such frauds operate is by using an unbelievably simple four-step procedure, preying on unwitting consumers.” In the first step of this QR code fraud, the scammer creates a phony QR code that sends the consumer to a fraudulent website where consumers are supposed to pay for electricity charges. At this stage, the QR code fraud requests the consumer to enter their personal details along with a six-digit code.”
The Working of Fake QR Codes Scam
The working of the fake QR code scam lies in the trust of customers in the digital billing system which has become popular in the electricity distribution network of Pakistan. The victim scans the QR code which seems legit, visits a scam website, and willingly provides sensitive details thinking that they are dealing with an authentic platform.
There was one point that the spokesman for the Power Division made very clear; information about electricity bills can only be found at the authorised website, and links leading to a different site were considered fraud.
Law Enforcement Agencies That Are Already Involving Themselves With This Scam
As opposed to simply issuing a regular consumer notice, the Power Division saw the threat posed by this false QR code scam as something more serious. The law enforcement agencies have already been notified regarding the organized crime organizations that lie behind these scams.
That’s due to the gravity of the situation. Fraudulent QR code scams that have targeted utility consumers have been responsible for causing considerable loss of funds and personal data elsewhere, and it seems like the Pakistani government does not want to let it go any further than that.
What consumers should do currently
The directive from the Power Division has a clear message that all consumers of electricity must take note of. No one is supposed to give out any information about the subsidy scheme either through digital means or paperwork using any platform apart from the official ones. The scam involving the QR code targets the financial value of the subsidy information.
Any consumer receiving a QR code that is unexpected and related to electricity bill payments or subsidy registrations needs to exercise extreme caution right away. The practice of scanning uninvited QR codes, clicking on links without verification, and entering six-digit codes on new platforms is precisely what this scheme uses to its advantage.

Growing Cyber Criminal Problem in Digital Pakistan
The fraudulent scheme involving the fake QR code is an indication of cyber criminals using Pakistan’s burgeoning digital utility network. This can be seen by the rise in consumer registration for electronic bills and subsidies. The criminal element is able to create systems that mimic government structures sufficiently to defraud people.
Being aware is the best protection one can have. The Power Division Advisory alerts people to what they need to know – but it takes immediate action to protect personal information from these cyber criminals.
