Pakistani Rupee Settles at 278.51 as Dollar Softens Globally

KARACHI: Pakistani rupee edged up slightly against the greenback in the interbank segment on Monday to close at 278.51. The local currency witnessed an increase of only Re0.01 from Friday’s closing rate of 278.52, according to the official data of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
This was achieved via a declaration issued officially at the house of the Prime Minister, implying that the decision regarding timing was a conscious one. Fuel prices affect all aspects of the economy, from the rickshaw owners ferrying people in Karachi to the trucks transporting cargo in the highways of Punjab.
Uncertainty of Iran Peace Deal Brings Volatility in Global Currencies
The global market opened the week amid some uncertainty. On the weekend, it became clear that hopes for a strong peace agreement between the two nations seemed far off. On Saturday, the US president Donald Trump stated that a memorandum of understanding was almost signed, with mediators, among others in Pakistan, having made progress.
The level of risk sentiment determines demand for the US dollar in terms of being a safe haven asset. As geopolitical risks increase, there is usually a rush to the US dollar, which creates an upward pressure on the value of the US dollar vis-a-vis other currencies, like the Pakistani rupee. The marginal rise seen today is due to the current global environment.
Currency Pair Analysis: Weaker USD
What their counterparts did
Overall, the broad US dollar was under some pressure yesterday amid the positive performance of other major currencies. The euro rose 0.3% to $1.1642, reversing declines from the previous days, which were triggered by tensions between the United States and Iran. The pound gained 0.4% to $1.3485, driven also by improving risk sentiment in Europe.
Other currencies correlated with commodities also made significant gains. The Australian dollar appreciated by 0.4% to reach $0.7160, while the New Zealand dollar appreciated by 0.5% and closed at $0.5877, due to risk aversion as there were prospects of an agreement towards peace. The US dollar depreciated by 0.2%, reaching a value of 158.87 Japanese yen.
Factors behind the Stabilization of the Pakistani Rupee
Domestic factors
There is a striking stability that is evident in the movement of the Pakistani rupee to US dollar exchange rate. The Pakistani rupee has remained stable during the first half of 2026 in a remarkably narrow band, between 279.72 from its closing level in early February to 278.51 on Monday.
Expectations of US Interest Rate Policy Bring More Layers to the Equation
Perhaps one of the major influences on the dollar's future trend, and hence the rupee's future trend vis-a-vis the dollar, is the interest rate policy of the US Federal Reserve. The market had already discounted any chances of aggressive rate cuts after President Donald Trump nominated Kevin Warsh as the next Chairman of the Fed. Warsh is widely known to be conservative in his monetary policies, and this has helped keep the dollar strong against all other currencies.

Inter-Bank Exchange Rate and its Implications for Common Man
The inter-bank exchange rate determined every day by SBP forms the basis of a broad array of transactions. These include payments for imports, conversion of remittances into domestic currency, and valuation of foreign loans. A constant value of Pakistani rupee against the US dollar provides businesses some level of certainty they have lacked in recent years.
The country's foreign currency reserves have been growing over the last year thanks to loans from the IMF, bilateral funds, and the narrowing of the current account deficit. This combination serves to mitigate the negative impact that the rupee faced in 2023 and earlier in 2024. While imports continue to create constant demand for the dollar, the demand no longer exceeds the supply.
Prospects: Observing Geopolitics and the Fed
According to currency experts in Karachi, there are two major influences affecting the direction of the rupee in the short term. One is that a turn of events regarding the geopolitical conflict between the United States and Iran can create a lot of volatility in the US dollar, which in turn affects the Pakistani rupee's performance vis-à-vis the US dollar.
The rupee, for the moment, finds itself in a relatively stable yet rather uneventful condition. The slight rise seen on Monday, one paisa to be exact, makes no substantial difference in the short term. The Pakistani rupee has clearly broken free from the turbulent cycle that defined its performance over the past few years.
