Sindh Govt to Develop Livestock Sector With Modern Tagging System: Malkani

KARACHI: A meeting convened by the Board of Management of the Sindh Livestock Registration and Trade Authority took place at the Sindh Institute of Animal Health (SIAH) in Karachi under the chairmanship of Provincial Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Sindh, Muhammad Ali Malkani. With the formation of Sindh Livestock sector strategies underway, the meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss various proposals regarding the modernization of the provincial livestock sector.

The forum included participation from Dr. Kazim Hussain Jatoi, Secretary Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Nazir Hussain Kalhoro, Director General, Sindh Livestock Registration & Trade Authority, along with an Additional Secretary Finance, and the Deputy Secretary Livestock Mr. Muhammad Imran. Moreover, there were participants from Ministry of National Food Security & Research, Islamabad. The inclusion of participants from the national capital highlights the importance of this initiative at the federal level as well.

A Detailed Briefing on Sindh livestock sector

At the conference, the DG Authority made a comprehensive presentation to the board members on several matters relating to the industry. Among other things, there were numerous recommendations that dealt with developing the livestock industry in the province using state-of-the-art practices, enhancing the registration process, and better tracking of the cattle population.

In light of the initiatives aimed at achieving the aims set out for the Sindh Livestock Sector, the meeting focused on issues concerning the establishment of the Sindh Livestock Registration & Trade Authority. The topics discussed included the formulation of rules & regulations, formation of different committees, and nomination of the Director General.

In addition, the BoM has also endorsed the agenda to revive the livestock tagging and tracing project through the PPP modality. The proposed project aims to facilitate better identification, tracking, and documentation of livestock through an advanced framework, which the authorities claim would enhance transparency in livestock production and commerce within the province.

Speaking at the conference, Provincial Minister Muhammad Ali Malkani stated that the provincial government was implementing pragmatic policies to improve the livestock industry and make it compatible with contemporary needs. According to him, efficient management of livestock, enhanced production of high-quality milk and meat products, and export of livestock products have emerged as key initiatives taken by the government.

Addressing concerns on how a modern registration and tagging process will improve the sector’s performance, Malkani stated that “the Sindh Livestock Sector Initiative will ensure enhanced transparency and monitoring within the sector via an efficient system of registration and tracing.”

By focusing on quality milk and meat products production, he further explained that the province will benefit in gaining access to local and global markets.
