India Signs $1.2 Billion Deal for 300 R-37M Missiles, the Longest-Range Air-to-Air Missile Ever Exported

Share This Article:

DELHI: The ministry of defence in India has inked a deal to purchase 300 air-to-air missiles from Russia at an estimated value of more than $1.2 billion. This is one of the biggest purchases in the history of aerial weaponry that India has witnessed within recent times. According to several Indian media organizations, this deal will boost the capabilities of the Su-30MKI aircraft.

The R-37M missile is the most long-range air-to-air missile that has been sold to another country. Only the PL-17 from China and the AIM-174B from America can be considered its competitors when it comes to range. This makes India one of the rare countries possessing such weaponry.

What is R-37M Missile?

The R-37M missile is one of the most complicated weapons and has great potential in terms of carrying capacity. The payload of the weapon varies from 61kg. It also has the potential of traveling with supersonic velocity greater than Mach 6 with a range of 350 to 400 km. Considering the aforementioned characteristics, one could conclude that the R-37M missile could be applied against AWACS and EW aircraft.

For the SU-30MKI, the purchase will almost triple the range at which it can engage its targets.

With a warhead weight of 61 kilograms, the R-37M possesses an operational speed above Mach 6 and operates with ranges between 350 and 400 kilometers. This gives the missile the capability of targeting high-value aerial assets such as airborne early warning and control aircraft and electronic warfare aircraft far into enemy airspace without having to approach the target.

Programme of modernisation of Su-30MKI proceeds simultaneously

The contract for R-37M missiles comes along with a wider and more prolonged programme of modernising the Su-30MKI aircrafts. The Indian Defence Ministry had formally announced in late February that it will modernize its entire fleet of Su-30MKI jets using Russian expertise, with 84 planes in the initial phase being the priority.

This new radar is especially significant for the efficacy of the R-37M missile. Despite the range at which the target detection is possible by the existing radars onboard the Su-30MKI, the combination of its upgraded radar and targeting information provided by S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems as well as future fifth generation Su-57 fighters will increase the effective range of the missile considerably.

A larger trend of enhancing Indian airpower

The R-37M missile deal represents merely one aspect of a far more extensive effort by India to enhance its capabilities in aerial combat. In late March, the Ministry of Defence authorised the purchase of ten extra battalions of the S-400 surface-to-air missile, which can target enemy aircraft from as far as 400 kilometres away through the employment of the 40N6 missile. India used the 40N6 missile of the S-400 missile system in the confrontation that lasted for a month against Pakistan, which was reportedly targeting a valuable electronic warfare plane at extreme range from India’s position. Analysts say that the success of the deployment directly affected the faster acquisition of the R-37M missile, showing that India intends to acquire air-to-air missiles similar to their surface-based air defence missiles.

On the other hand, discussions between India and Russia regarding the stealth jet Su-57 entered a very technical stage, according to a statement issued by the Indian Ministry of Defense in January 2026. In mid-2025, Russia offered India something extraordinary, allowing it unrestricted access to the source code of the Su-57 fighter jets — something that Russia normally keeps within its own borders.

India-France deal on Rafale fighter jet stalls amid increasing military collaboration with Russia

India’s rising defense ties with Russia have caused the Rafale fighter deal between India and France to stall. India had set certain technological transfer conditions, which France did not meet, resulting in the collapse of the negotiations. In comparison, Russia has offered to provide source code of Su-57 and has been providing direct technological assistance in upgrading the Su-30MKI aircrafts.

Strategic Significance in Air Power Balance of the Region

The combination of the R-37M missile system integration, the Su-30MKI update, the S-400 deployment, and possibly the induction of the Su-57 aircraft will mark a generational change for Indian air power. According to military experts, there is no other air force in the South Asian region that deploys an air-to-air missile at such ranges. The inclusion of the R-37M missile capability in striking support and command-and-control aircraft from well beyond the usual missile range gives a new meaning to India’s air power deterrence strategy.
