The latest discovery is beginning to feed through to Pakistan’s pipeline network. Below is the significance of the Shams-1 discovery for SNGPL, the energy industry, and Mari’s proven track record for exploration
There has been an important rise in the natural gas production of the country. According to the declaration of Mari Energies Limited on Tuesday, it has started providing gas through Mari Energies Shams-1 project with the daily supply of 30 million cubic feet to SNGPL from Shams-1 discovery.
The information has been announced officially at the Pakistan Stock Exchange through an announcement made by the company in which the supply has started after getting official approval from the government.
Supply of gas from the Mari Energies Shams-1 has been officially in operation since June 19, 2026, with the gas being delivered during the Extended Well Testing stage of its operations, which is carried out for evaluating the production capabilities of a field.
Importance of EWT in This Case
Extended Well Testing (EWT) is a key component of this particular announcement. The reason why Extended Well Testing should not be taken just as a technical footnote is that EWT intervals give companies such as Mari Energies an opportunity to make money and deliver gas from their discoveries while conducting important reservoir tests at the same time.
It helps both the companies – Mari Energies and SNGPL equally. As far as SNGPL is concerned, it gets hold of extra gas earlier in time without having to go through the entire process of developing the field, while as far as Mari Energies is concerned, it starts earning money from Shams-1 immediately despite its evaluation of the potential of the field.
Operatorship of Mari and Track Record
The Mari Energies Shams-1 gas facility belongs to a wider operator environment that adds strength to the profile of the company in the exploration and production industry in Pakistan. The Mari Energies acts as the operator of the Mari Development and Production Lease with an impressive working interest of 100 percent, which gives the company total operational and financial control.
It makes sense that sole ownership is important for efficiency. Decisions regarding test procedures, start of supplies, and operations become faster in case there is one single entity owning all working interests in the process.
An Exploration Success Rate That Makes Headlines
That is highly significant if compared to industrial standards. The national success rate for exploration in Pakistan is about 33 percent, whereas the international average success rate is even lower at 14 percent. In the case of Mari Energies, the success rate is an impressive 70 percent, which means that the firm outshines the national and international standards significantly.

Who Exactly Purchases this Gas?
Knowledge about the larger market for the products manufactured by Mari Energies enables an understanding of the economic importance of having more gas available. Some of the major buyers include fertilizer producers, energy companies, gas distribution companies, and refineries.
Every one of these groups of customers depends critically on the reliability of natural gas supplies. The fertilizer industry is dependent on gas not just as raw material but also as the energy required for its processing activities, which in turn is vital for agriculture in Pakistan. Power generation companies use gas as fuel in their thermal plants, which ensure supply of power to households and industries. Gas distribution companies, such as SNGPL, themselves, are dependent on producers like Mari Energies for ensuring adequate supplies.
Implications of This Development on the Energy Scenario in Pakistan
The gas from Mari Energies Shams-1 comes at a time when the country is still dealing with shortages in gas supplies in relation to its increasing demand. Each new gas find that transitions from exploration to supply makes an important step towards resolving the supply and demand issue.
For SNGPL in particular, getting an extra 30 MMscfd ensures that the distributor firm is better able to fulfill their obligations to their customers in the areas where they operate. As far as Mari Energies is concerned, the success of Shams-1 in getting on stream further establishes the company’s standing as one of the most successful E&P companies in Pakistan.
