More than 150,000 pre-orders before the vehicle was driven anywhere on the roads. Expected to travel nearly 600 miles An expected range of almost 600 miles. Going from zero to full charge in less than 10 minutes. As well as pricing that beats its competitors by tens of thousands of dollars. This is what the BYD Great Tang SUV has to offer.

Large SUVs are known to cost large amounts of money even more than $50,000 in some cases for a minor facelift edition. Now, the BYD Great Tang SUV has managed to completely reverse this trend and the people of China have bought in like never before for the company.

The figures relating to this launch are truly astounding. The BYD Great Tang SUV was unveiled for the first time at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24, and within two weeks of its unveiling, pre-orders had crossed 100,000. Even before the vehicle, which is also available under the brand name ‘Datang’ in China, went into production, it emerged that orders had exceeded 150,000.

Power Behind the SUV

Underneath all the exciting talk about the BYD Great Tang SUV’s price tags is a truly advanced technology platform. The SUV features the most recent 1,000V high-voltage platform from BYD, which comes in combination with the lithium-iron-phosphate battery that holds up to 105.79 kWh in the standard model – enough for a 800 km range.

Advanced-level trims offer this feature an extra push. These trims come with an enhanced 130.15 kWh power pack, giving the car a range of up to 590 miles, or 950 km, on the CLTC standards. To put things into perspective as far as the wider EV industry is concerned, few cars are capable of delivering similar performance in ranges of over 600 miles.

Unbelievable Charging Speed

One of the most unbelievable specifications that could be found at BYD Great Tang SUV is the charging speed. The car allows its users to charge its battery to 10% to 70% in only five minutes and up to 97% in nine minutes. Practically, this means that it only takes less than ten minutes for BYD Great Tang SUV to be charged from zero to almost full. It is unbelievable because it was more science fiction just some time ago.

Power, Performance and 29 “World-First” Technologies

The Great Tang SUV, according to BYD, features 29 “world-first” technologies. While it’s certainly questionable whether all 29 of those “world firsts” pass independent muster, there are a few individual technologies that BYD has crammed into its new vehicle that would have been able to stand alone as a selling point on any competing car – megawatt charging capability, a 1,000V electrical system, 600 miles of range and a 10C battery.

Regarding power output, the basic version of the BYD Great Tang SUV uses an electric motor with 402 horsepower or 300 kW power output driving the rear wheels. For those who desire a high-performance vehicle, one can upgrade to the single motor with 496 hp, or even further upgrade to a dual motor with a significant 784 hp or 585 kW power output. However, such a high-performance variant compromises on the range and comes down to 528 miles or 850 km.

Beneath the Skin of Engineering

The BYD Great Tang has been designed with a relatively long 123.2-inch, or 3,130mm wheelbase. The car is mounted by the proprietary DiSus-A intelligent suspension technology from BYD. The technology is equipped with dual chamber air springs that can be varied up to 100mm travel range, together with road previewing sensors incorporated into the suspension design that adjust the damping force depending on upcoming road surface conditions.

A Cabin Crafted For Real Luxury

The comfort of the interior seems to be one of the main selling points of the BYD Great Tang SUV. The model is equipped with China’s first 2+2+3 seven-seater layout that features Captain-style seats with a zero gravity system. The seats in the second row can offer massage, heating, and ventilating options along with the ability to recline up to 146 degrees and leg rests up to 70 degrees.
