RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has made its biggest move yet towards becoming a cricket destination in the international circuit by virtue of a groundbreaking partnership between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan for the development of a world class cricket ground in Jeddah.
However, the deal, which was signed between PCB and SACF, is much more than building a new venue. As stated by Focus Pakistan, the partnership highlights that the Saudi Arabia has been planning for quite a while to become an important stakeholder in world cricket, at the same time generating new prospects in terms of business, tourism, and investments under Vision 2030. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and SACF Chairman Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Mohammad Al Saud signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Riyadh on Thursday during Naqvi’s official visit to Saudi Arabia.

According to the experts, this will change the fortunes of the country by turning it into a center for cricket that can host some of the best teams in the world.According to Prince Saud bin Mishal, this is a long-term commitment towards the future of sports in Saudi Arabia.
Pakistan’s Experience Adds Value to Saudi Cricket Revival
Pakistan is joining the venture with decades of experience of running cricket events and creating domestic structures that can compete internationally. Addressing after the signing of the deal, Mohsin Naqvi termed the deal as a chance to create a legacy for the sport in addition to cementing ties between the two nations through sports.
As per Focus Pakistan, Pakistan’s expertise in stadium management, field management, tournament management, and player development can help advance the cricket aspirations of Saudi Arabia much faster than building the system from scratch. This collaboration also paves the way for coaching exchange, technical training, player development programs, and future cricket tournaments between the two nations.
Vision 2030 Moves Past Football
Saudi Arabia has invested billions of dollars in football, golf, Formula One, boxing, and esports over the past few years. Now cricket is also part of this list of growing sports. A Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation has been established in 2020 in order to develop the sport and raise its standards.
Millions of South Asian expatriates already have a love for cricket in Saudi Arabia, making this sport an established favorite for which very few aspiring cricket-playing nations can boast. Experts feel that a purpose-built international cricket ground will promote bilateral series, youth matches, and franchise matches and increase revenue from sports tourism and hospitality.
Why the Jeddah Stadium Matters
According to Focus Pakistan, the Jeddah venture is much more than just a new addition of the sports facility. It is the way how Saudi Arabia has been trying to implement its policy of diversification through the creation of sporting facilities. If everything will go according to the plan, then the venue might end up hosting the ICC tournaments, the games between the international teams and even the T20 games which would put Saudi Arabia on the cricket map of the world.
For Pakistan, it is another step forward in building strong diplomatic ties and cooperation in the field of cricket with its main strategic partner while at the same time putting its own experience in creating the next generation of cricket. And as the cricket continues to expand far beyond its borders, the Pakistani-Saudi collaboration may turn out to be one of the most important things in the history of the sport.
