Google Rationed Gemini Access to Meta as AI Compute Crunch Delays Projects

Meta was informed by Google that it cannot provide the required computing power needed for its entire Gemini platform, which created disruption in internal AI projects and forced Meta employees to manage AI tokens as Google Cloud had its own backlog double in just one quarter.

Google informed Meta that it was unable to fulfill Meta’s complete requirements regarding Gemini AI computing power, on Sunday, which is a statement highlighting the fact that the demand for computing from the AI industry has far exceeded what the biggest cloud company can provide. The lack of computing caused some disruptions in the progress of some internal projects of Meta, forcing the latter to encourage its employees to use AI tokens more efficiently.

What does the shortfall of Gemini Model Capacity for Meta mean?

The Gemini Model Capacity for Meta case provides insight into a structural limitation lying beneath the AI industry’s hype surrounding investments in the field. In this case, the company wanted a certain level of capacity of Google’s Gemini model to help it work on projects involving its ambitious plans for artificial intelligence.

However, in March, Google told Meta that it was not able to provide it with everything it wanted. The shortage was serious enough to force Meta to rethink some of its projects, which led to the company encouraging employees to use AI tokens sparingly.

Meta isn’t the only party involved. Other users of Google Cloud services have faced compute limits, the FT said, but the effect on these customers is lesser than that on Meta, because none of these customers was using Gemini at such a large scale.

Google Cloud experiences the same pressure it placed on everyone else

Google’s Gemini shortage problem was that it impacted Google Cloud’s profitability at the same time. Google Cloud managed to increase its revenue to $20 billion in Q1 2026, although CEO Sundar Pichai noted that limitations in computing power stopped the company from achieving even higher results, leading to an increase in its cloud division’s backlog by almost twice in one quarter. It is not that Google Cloud lacks customers for its services, as the reason it refuses orders from Meta and others is that it simply cannot manufacture capacity quick enough to satisfy the demand it creates.

Token rationing at Meta – what it means

While token rationing at Meta as a response to the shortage of capacity in its own AI can be understood as an effort to increase efficiency, the situation has much more meaning. Meta has spent tens of billions of dollars developing its own AI infrastructure, develops its own models Llama and employs some of the biggest research teams in AI development. The fact that such an organization resorts to rationing access to external AI model means that the lack of sufficient compute capacity for the needs of AI development cannot be overcome by simply throwing money at it.

Industry-wide structural challenge

There is an overarching problem underlying the Google Gemini Meta capacity limitation. It represents a structural challenge in the AI industry as a whole. Despite the billions being spent by firms in chips and data centres, the building of such massive computer infrastructure lags behind the growing demand for AI solutions.

The GPUs offered by Nvidia have extended lead times; the power and cooling system limits the density of data centres; permitting and grid connection take several years. This has resulted in companies that can afford to build the needed infrastructure getting stuck in line due to their prior commitments.
