Pakistan Qatar LNG Cargo Arrives Twice in Three Days

Share This Article:

KARACHI: The deliveries of Qatar-Pakistan LNG have speeded up significantly as Pakistan has received two cargoes from Qatar in a span of just three days, which shows how desperate Islamabad is in ensuring that it has sufficient fuel at this point due to ongoing tensions between Iran, the US, and Israel, which have affected LNG supplies around the world.

The back-to-back arrival of LNG from Pakistan and Qatar is indicative of a well-thought-out strategy on the part of the government, importing additional quantities of energy before any worsening situation in the region regarding their supply, in the context of increasing tensions over the possibility of an Iranian confrontation and disruptions in shipping channels.

LNG Volume of 160,000 Cubic Meters Delivered on Friday

The most recent delivery of Qatar Pakistan LNG has been made on Friday after unloading the LNG vessel Mozah at the Terminal 1 of Pakistan GasPort Consortium Limited situated at Port Qasim in Karachi. The cargo holds around 160,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas, a massive quantity which is fed to the Pakistan distribution network and gas-fired power plants of Pakistan.

The arrival of the Mozah to Terminal 1 marks the second Pakistan Qatar LNG cargo to arrive in Pakistan’s territorial waters after only three days. The swiftness of the delivery process is an indication of how vital the shipment of energy is for Pakistan while also indicating that Qatar can send out its shipments quickly.

The Handling by Terminal 1

One of Pakistan’s main LNG receiving terminals is the Terminal 1 of the Pakistan GasPort Consortium Limited, located in Port Qasim, an installation which was created for the reception, processing, and delivery of significant volumes of LNG shipments to the gas transportation system of Pakistan, all with the necessary speed and efficiency. This means that the Pakistani importing infrastructure can cope with accelerated deliveries where necessary in the case of an energy crisis.

Engro Terminal Welcomed Al Kharsaah Ship on May 13

Pakistan Qatar LNG cargo chain commenced with the arrival of Q-Flex LNG carrier Al Kharsaah at Engro LNG Terminal on May 13. It is another significant LNG terminal located at Port Qasim in Pakistan. These two LNG cargoes will definitely help in addressing Pakistan’s energy deficit situation.

The presence of two different terminals, Terminal 1 of Pakistan GasPort Consortium for Mozah and Engro LNG Terminal for Al Kharsaah, indicates the capability of Pakistan to conduct import operations simultaneously or almost simultaneously on its existing LNG facilities, making the process of importation of large volumes of gas quick.

Regional Conflicts Disrupt Supply Chains

The urgency to move Pakistan’s Qatar LNG cargo is directly related to the reality that is developing in the Middle East region at this moment. The current conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel has resulted in the emergence of real uncertainty in the energy supply chain within the region – especially for those like Pakistan that rely upon gas cargo from the Gulf region by sea.

The electricity generation sector in Pakistan is under strain from various fronts at once. Lack of local gas, high demand for power in summers, and reduced availability of LNG from other places have combined to make the location of Qatar more appealing due to its proximity and security for strategic reasons in Pakistan currently.

A Strategic Partnership That Bears Fruit

LNG cargos from Pakistan Qatar arriving on two occasions in just three days speak volumes about the energy partnership between both nations, which bears fruit for Pakistan in times of need. Qatar’s standing among the top global producers and exporters of LNG, together with its proximity to Pakistan through the Arabian Sea, makes it the most effective partner for Pakistani LNG imports during periods of disruption in the region.

The rapidity of Pakistan’s acquisition and receipt of two cargo ships of liquefied natural gas from Qatar indicates that the bilateral supply chain possesses sufficient flexibility and responsiveness to be very important for Pakistan’s energy planners, especially when dealing with critical situations where time constraints become more significant than cost minimization.

With Pakistan still dealing with the energy issues faced due to the conflicts in the region, it is reassuring to see the reliable shipment of the Pakistan Qatar LNG cargo vessels ensuring power generation and provision to consumers during one of the most politically volatile times that the region has seen in recent years.
