Singapore's NUS Leads Southeast Asia in Global Mathematics Rankings

SINGAPORE: According to the most recent U.S. News Best Global Universities Mathematics Ranking, the National University of Singapore has emerged the top-ranked institution in mathematics in the whole of Southeast Asia and ranks 32nd worldwide, tied with Imperial College London in the United Kingdom.
The NUS best global universities mathematics ranking 2026 result puts Singapore’s topmost university as one of the world’s top-ranking mathematics universities, an achievement which is testimony to the huge investment made by the second richest nation in the world by GDP per capita into its universities.
The only other university from Singapore in this ranking, Nanyang Technological University, was ranked 234th, which makes NUS’s 32nd position an outlier even in comparison to the strong higher education environment in Singapore.
Global Top 10 — Leadership in Mathematics Worldwide
Stanford University is ranked first in the best mathematics universities in the world by the NUS list for 2026, followed by Princeton University and Oxford University. Only five foreign universities apart from those in the USA and the United Kingdom are represented in the top 10 of this rating: apart from the NUS, these universities include Peking University, which occupies the sixth position; ETH Zurich, occupying the seventh position; and Sorbonne University, occupying the ninth position.
What should be emphasized is that the sixth position of Peking University is the best result obtained by any Asian university in this rating, and this is the only university in the top 10 located in Asia.
Rating Compilation of 2026-2027
NUS rating of best global universities mathematics 2026 is based on the methodology of the U.S. News Best Global Universities rating announced in June 2026 and comprising 559 universities. Only those who had at least 250 publications in mathematics for the period of 2020-2024 were qualified to participate, which automatically excludes teaching-oriented universities from the group of research-oriented ones. The ranking involved the top 500 qualified universities.
Since the methodology is built on the indicators of the volume and impact of research publications, the NUS best global universities mathematics ranking 2026 is an assessment of the mathematical research output and influence.
Number one in the world in optics is especially impressive considering that NUS outranks all American and European institutions in a subject that has many applications in areas such as semiconductors, telecommunications, and medical imaging. The AI and computer science rankings are in keeping with Singapore’s strategy to become an international technology hub.

Singapore’s Academic Excellence – The Context of Wealth
The outcome of the NUS Best Global Universities Mathematics Ranking 2026 is from a nation that was ranked by The Economist as the second wealthiest in the world in terms of GDP per capita in 2025. The immense wealth per capita that Singapore enjoys goes into the making of both prosperity for consumers and excellence of institutions, as the government keeps funding its research and universities.
This relationship between Singapore’s economic model which is open and trade oriented while attracting talented people and heavily investing in knowledge infrastructure and the success of its universities’ rankings is not accidental at all.
Both NUS and NTU have benefitted from the same kind of institutional setting that has made Singapore into a global center for finance and technology, that is, having access to world class talent from Asia and beyond, government investment in their universities as strategic assets, and international orientation of the Singapore universities.
For nations like Pakistan that wish to establish their own world-class universities through HEPC programs and foreign collaborations, the example of Singapore clearly demonstrates the end result of long-term commitment towards establishing academic research excellence, as seen from global rankings and the actual results of research.
