KARACHI / WASHINGTON / TEHRAN: US Iran ceasefire dominates global headlines as Donald Trump halted a planned strike on Iran just hours before execution, following critical diplomatic intervention led by Pakistan.
However, Pakistan was successful in avoiding any regional warfare due to their diplomatic efforts, whereby Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir and other military personnel from Pakistan had talks with America. It turned out that Pakistan persuaded America not to launch attacks on Iran, providing that they open the important strait of Hormuz.
US Iran Ceasefire: Pakistan Steps In to Prevent War
When the situation was getting worst, it was Pakistan that acted as the main mediator in solving the issue. As reported by Donald Trump himself, talks with Pakistani officials helped persuade him against resorting to further military actions.
The policy change was communicated by the President Donald Trump through his social media website called Truth Social. The reason behind it is that Trump assured that he would not start the attack but will wait for 14 days for Iran to provide safe passage for ships through the strait of Hormuz.
Iran Agreeing on Conditioned De-escalation
After Trump’s statement, Araghchi made clear that Iran is willing to help create safety through the Strait of Hormuz under certain coordination of its military forces.
In his words, Iran would stop all defensive measures should any attacks against Iran stop.Abbas Araghchi described the move as a temporary but important opportunity for diplomacy. He confirmed that Iran will guarantee safe maritime transit over the next two weeks.
Iran’s administration appreciated Pakistan for mediating the de-escalation process in the fast-growing crisis situation.
Strait of Hormuz Back in the Spotlight
The resumption of activity at the Strait of Hormuz is of paramount importance for the entire planet, since the Strait is one of the key passages of oil transport worldwide, and any disturbance in its work is able to cause serious shock to the global market of energy resources.
Iran’s consent to secure safe passage guarantees investors some sense of security, while the temporary easing of tensions is likely to prevent price fluctuations in the oil industry.
An Uncertain yet Essential Opening
Even though this kind of thinking offers a temporary relief, it doesn’t provide assurance that there will be success in the future because the window is still delicate at this moment.
The Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stressed the need for further negotiation to achieve a permanent result and expand the ceasefire agreement beyond the first two weeks. Contrary, the American government kept its standpoint unchanged since it demonstrated the readiness to conduct additional military actions.
Diplomatic Success of Pakistan
Pakistan was crucial in bringing about this success. In doing so, it ensured that the parties involved did not clash straightaway, but rather made way for constructive dialogue.
It can easily be seen from this success that Pakistan now became fully able to mediate in such a situation of geopolitical tension, especially in those areas where there may arise a conflict rapidly and it would affect the whole world.
We only have to wait what will happen in the coming weeks.
