Qantas Set to Launch World’s Longest Non-Stop Flight in 2027

  • Qantas will launch the world’s longest non-stop flight by 2027, introducing its ambitious 22-hour Sydney to London route under Project Sunrise.

Soon, the entire aviation industry will experience a massive revolution. Starting from the second quarter of 2027, the Australian national airline company, Qantas, will launch the world’s longest flight that would fly nonstop from the United Kingdom to Australia, covering a distance of over 9,000 miles within 22 hours.

The program, titled Project Sunrise, will be a revolutionary move to provide an entirely seamless journey from Europe to Oceania. As per the expectations of the company, passengers can cut down up to four hours of their travel time.

Cabin Redesign

Being in a pressurized tube for almost an entire day poses numerous physiological problems. In order to deal with the common problem of “cabin fever,” Qantas has completely transformed the interior layout of its new Airbus A350s. Although the airplane can accommodate 300 passengers, Qantas is limiting this number to just 238.

The focus here is clearly “elbow room” rather than seat capacity. Most notable is the “Wellbeing Zone,” located between economy and premium classes. This area allows travelers to move around, get some refreshments, and even perform stretching exercises on screens in order to reduce risks of deep vein thrombosis.

While those seated up front get a taste of what it is like in a luxury hotel rather than on an aircraft, first-class accommodations will offer a separate chair and bed, a wardrobe for changing clothes, and a television measuring 32 inches. For the folks at the rear, too, there will be more leg room that makes sitting for 22 hours tolerable.

The Engineering Milestone

The aircraft responsible for achieving this feat is Airbus’ latest offering called the A350 aircraft. This particular aircraft was custom-made for “Project Sunrise” by Qantas. Its first prototype emerged from a hangar in Toulouse, France, mere days back and will undergo testing phases for two months before going into commercial use.

Qantas has removed several seats from the aircraft to accommodate only 238 passengers, which is well below the 300 seats capacity of an A350. However, this surplus area will be utilized in something completely innovative. Think stretching areas, not just a slightly wider armrest.

First-class passengers get a private suite with a separate armchair and lie-flat bed, a personal wardrobe, and a 32-inch TV which, honestly, makes the 22-hour prospect feel far more manageable. Economy travellers gain more legroom than current long-haul configurations typically allow.

The Cost of Convenience

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson confirmed last year that economy fares will run roughly 20 percent higher than existing Sydney-London tickets. Standard economy seats on that route currently start around £800 with a stopover meaning flyers should budget upward of £960 for the privilege of flying straight through. Final pricing for both the London and New York routes remains unconfirmed.

Why This Actually Matters

Beyond the novelty of the record, this flight addresses a genuine pain point for millions of travellers particularly Australians living abroad and families navigating long-haul connections with children. Eliminating a two-hour stopover plus a transit hotel stay changes the economics and the energy of the trip entirely.
Qantas has announced that the flights to London and New York will be introduced at the same time in early 2027, departing from Sydney.

A record-breaking flight is now a reality.. The jet is built, the route is set, and the countdown has started whether your legs are ready or not.
