172km Expressway Corridor Approved to Improve Access to Kaghan and Chilas

Anyone who’s driven Mansehra to Chilas in July knows about the gridlock, unexpected rockfall, and deadly drops. Hugging dangerous curves with a drop to the valley floor far below, drivers take this risky route.Folks have been making this trip for years, yet every year, somebody doesn’t survive.

The MNJC Motorway, a 172-kilometer four-lane expressway linking Mansehra, Kaghan, Naran, Jalkhand, Babusar Top, and Chilas, recently got the green light. This approval means way more than improved roads for families that brave those terrifying blind corners yearly – it could literally save lives. Yeah, it’s a pretty direct route through those areas. It’s named after its endpoints and got government approval. This approval was long discussed, often delayed, and frequently debated. But now, finally, they’ll build it.

The MNJC Motorway’s main effect is on distance. It shortens trips between important northern places by up to 120 kilometers, compared to the current KKH route. This means huge time savings, less fuel used, and way less wear and tear on cars for the millions who drive this route each year.

The MNJC Motorway conquers tough terrain beyond just distance. With its 13.5-kilometer Babusar Tunnel, it hits two birds with one stone. The crown jewel of this project is a 13.5-kilometre tunnel through Babusar Top. When finished, it’ll be the longest road tunnel in Pakistan’s history. So incredible engineering efforts go into making this happen. So snow won’t cause any problems now.

The motorway improves our travels too. It’ll upgrade us from the old single-lane highway to a modern four-lane one. That means separate traffic lanes and emergency roads. The current KKH wasn’t made for heavy traffic like today’s. They built it way back when for fewer cars, so this new setup is long overdue.

Two Phases, One Transformational Corridor

The project has two phases, letting builders work on different parts at the same time. This helps manage the super complex logistics of constructing through Pakistan’s tough mountain areas, making it easier to deal with the challenging terrain.

Phase one looks at the lower corridor from Mansehra to Naran through the Kaghan Valley. This area already has lots of traffic due to its road density. It gets the most domestic tourists and suffers from serious congestion in the summer months.

Phase two focuses on the higher-altitude parts, ending with the Babusar Tunnel and the trip down to Chilas. The engineering highlight here is this tunnel. This huge challenge needs top-notch tunnel experts and careful planning.

The Economic Case Is Stronger Than the Tourism Headlines Suggest

Tourism is the main selling point for the MNJC Motorway, which makes sense. Naran and Kaghan Valley already attract millions of domestic visitors yearly. With improved road access, the number of tourists will go up dramatically, plus the feasible tourist season will stretch out past just the summer peak.

The real deal is about trade, not tourism. Located where Gilgit-Baltistan meets KP, Chilas plays a key role in northern Pakistan’s commercial supply chain. Currently, goods heading between Gilgit, Skardu, and southern markets rely completely on the KKH. So, any disruptions like landslides or floods shut down that flow entirely.

The MNJC Motorway sets up a parallel path. It gives traders, transporters, and logistics folks another good route. Also, over time, less transport costs mean lower prices for basics in mountain areas. These places already deal with pricey supply chains, so the motorway can really help them out.

A Project That Reframes Northern Pakistan’s Future

Northern Pakistan faces a weird situation: it’s rich in nature but lacks basic road infrastructure. The Kaghan Valley and Gilgit-Baltistan gateway could earn tons from tourism. Still, the roads can’t handle the growing population or meet the country’s goals for these areas. So, while the landscape draws in visitors, poor roads hold back any real revenue gains.

When finished, the MNJC Motorway will fix that big problem. It’ll give us year-round connection and safer roads. Plus, it shrinks travel times. Quality transport means more jobs and wealth, which always follows these kinds of projects.

The MNJC Motorway won’t solve everything, but it tackles the biggest issue on the most heavily traveled route up north. This 172-kilometer, four-lane road, featuring Pakistan’s longest tunnel, is far from minor. It’s a huge, generational upgrade for an area millions rely on daily.

For families who take that route each year, praying at twisty blind corners, the project’s approval means more than just a construction plan. To them, it’s very real and could save lives and ease their journey.
