What Happens to Your Brain When You Let AI Do All the Thinking

The recently conducted study has revealed a critical issue related to the effects of using AI in the learning process of university students.According to the study carried out in the journal Social Sciences and Humanities Open, the learners using the AI gadgets in the process of learning were poor in the memory retention test as compared to those who did not use technology in their learning process. The emergence of generative AI has been on the rise in recent times globally.

Study Overview and Results

The first group could use ChatGPT at will to aid their studies, while the second group relied on conventional means of studying with no involvement from artificial intelligence. After 45 days, scientists gave both groups an unexpected memory test.

The results pointed clearly in one direction. Students who relied on AI tools scored an average of 57.5% on the retention test, while students who studied without AI assistance scored 68.5% — an 11 percentage point gap that researchers described as statistically significant. The findings suggest that AI causing memory loss may not be as far-fetched as it once seemed. While AI tools made studying faster and easier in the short term, they appeared to reduce the mental effort that normally strengthens long-term memory and deep understanding.

Offloading Cognition

Cognitive offloading was found to be the key process responsible for these results – an aspect of psychology that sees individuals use external devices to perform cognitive processes instead of their brains. In cases where students seek the help of AI technology to provide an explanation or solve a problem, they receive immediate feedback without experiencing the process of mental exhaustion needed to retain information within their memory banks.

Scientists refer to this mental exercise as desirable difficulties, which is a vital component of the learning process for humans. The short-lived frustration associated with struggling with a challenging problem, remembering facts on one’s own, or coming up with explanations without any help can lead to better learning results. On the contrary, AI devices may generate the exact opposite effect by making learning easier.

What the Study Proves and Does Not Prove

The results from the study have been widely disseminated throughout the internet, with various publications asserting that AI-based software could permanently impair creativity or intellect. However, this is not what the findings show. Researchers were unable to find any indication that the use of AI technology can cause cognitive damage or brain impairment. What researchers discovered is that the continuous and unrestricted use of AI systems may develop a tendency toward dependency that serves as a crutch for cognition.

This difference is important. The study does not offer concrete conclusions about brain damage; nevertheless, it offers alerts concerning behavioral characteristics and methods of learning. Nevertheless, the alert becomes essential for teachers, students, and decision-makers who will incorporate artificial intelligence technology into learning systems.

Transitioning from Memorization to Information Location

Studies have also made mention of larger issues within academia concerning the possibility that the increasing use of AI support systems might eventually lead students to transition from memorizing information to only having to locate the required data when necessary.

As AI applications become a norm in the daily life of students around the world, there arises an urgency about how to make the most of the technology without compromising learning goals. Based on the results of the current research, it appears that limited utilization of AI applications would enable learners to reap the rewards of the technology without compromising the process of learning itself.
