X Launches ‘XChat’ — A WhatsApp Rival With Encrypted Calls and File Sharing

Share This Article:

SAN FRANCISCO: X Chat is a messaging app offered by X. It is an important milestone for the firm as they have developed a messaging system with enhanced privacy and voice calling functions.

New XChat application will be available first for iOS and enables direct chat between X friends using messaging, calling (audio and video), file exchange, and even group discussions. This launch can be regarded as one of the most significant steps made by the company within its strategy of enhancing communication services.

However, the company had already been testing out XChat, although only with a few beta testers during the early stages of the year. During that period, X managed to obtain valuable feedback from their users, improving the performance and user experience of their application while trying out their privacy feature ahead of its launch date.

X explained that the XChat program offers many privacy features, which enhance the privacy of chatting. This feature allows users to change their sent messages and also erase messages for everyone in the chatroom.

XChat app adds privacy features

Furthermore, the company noted that XChat uses end-to-end encryption for all messages and applies PIN protection to ensure that no one else can view the data transferred through the app. Also, the firm noted that there are no ads or trackers in the application.

In contrast to its prior strategy of developing one unified system, xAI, which is Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm and runs X, is now developing various individual apps to increase user reach and interaction.

XChat app changes “everything app” strategy

XChat is an indication of the new strategy, which departs from the previous plans of Elon Musk to make X a platform that integrates messaging, payment, shopping, artificial intelligence, and creators’ applications.

It is worth noting that critics in security fields have long criticized the strength of encryption used in previous editions of the communication mechanism developed by X. It is also important to state that, prior to this edition, people have compared X’s security applications with other encrypted systems such as Signal.

The cybersecurity analysts will also seek to analyze the standalone version of XChat in order to establish whether there have been any improvements in the company’s encryption system.

XChat will also replace the current communities on X, as the company has decided to close X Communities due to low participation and a high volume of spam messages. X will move all the discussions in the communities to the XChat platform.

Observers in the industry state that the move would not only allow X to control all communications activities through one source but will also increase user activity on the platform.

As stated by Benji Taylor, the lead designer of X, this is only the beginning of what is yet to come. The company expects to roll out additional updates and features over the next few weeks, although Mr. Taylor has not shared any information about the upcoming release dates.

XChat app launch signals new direction for X

The company continues to investigate other kinds of products, including payment application software, which is currently under development. Yet, there has been no official announcement from X on when the payments app will be launched.

Based on the analysis of the market experts, the development of XChat is part of the general trend of modularity in the product and service development of X where there is a shift from developing an all-in-one application to developing several applications that serve different purposes. This way, X can gain a competitive advantage in certain areas like messaging, fintech, and communication technologies.

XChat’s introduction will help in cementing X’s position in the messaging industry and also increase their product line of standalone digital products.

Through the introduction of XChat, X hopes to consolidate its presence in the messaging industry and grow its family of independent digital products.
