Ferrari Unveils Luce, Its First Fully Electric Car, Designed by Apple’s Jony Ive

MARANELLO: On Sunday, Ferrari unveiled its new Luce, the first-ever car from the luxury sports car maker that does not use an internal combustion engine, in the Vela di Calatrava stadium in Rome. The base price of the Ferrari Luce electric vehicle is set at 550,000 euros in Italy, which translates to about $640,000, making it one of the costliest models for Ferrari after limited editions and definitely among those cars affordable only to extremely wealthy people whom Ferrari wants to target with its new model.

The name ‘Luce’ refers to the Italian word for light; however, the introduction of the Ferrari Luce electric car is not coming at an easy time for electric cars because the market for EVs has lost favor in America, which is the biggest luxury automobile market in the world.

Jony Ive Infuses Ferrari Design Principles from Apple into New Electric Vehicle

The Ferrari Luce is not the result of the design team at Ferrari alone. The luxury car manufacturer created the new electric car model in conjunction with Jony Ive, who is famous for his designs of the iPhone, iMac, and Apple Watch, which revolutionized product design as we know it today. This collaboration resulted in an approach to Ferrari Luce electric car design characterized by glass, light, and open space instead of aerodynamic aggression typical of Ferraris.

In the end, it is something that Ferrari CEO John Elkann explained clearly when he said at the launch event held on Sunday, “It was important for us to do something that we couldn’t do before.” The Ferrari Luce electric car is more of a creative endeavor from Ferrari than an effort driven by necessity to keep up with changing times in the auto industry.

A Launch Event Rivaling the Car in Its Spectacularity

For the unveiling of the Ferrari Luce, an all-electric car, the car maker chose Vela di Calatrava – Rome’s spectacular stadium where concrete sails tower up high, built for the celebration of the Vatican’s 2025 Jubilee. For dinner, there was tortellini prepared by Italy’s star chef Massimo Bottura; light shows; films of Formula One drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc testing their skills in driving the car at its limit on a racetrack.

The Luce was not simply about introducing a new product. Instead, it was about making a statement that would make their existing customer base feel confident that the company was innovating while still respecting its heritage.

Checking If Superrich Crave Electric Power

Ferrari is introducing its electric Luce automobile at a time when the luxury EV sector seems to be battling tough odds. Demand for electric vehicles by wealthy customers in the United States, which constitutes Ferrari’s most vital and lucrative market, seems to have weakened significantly since 2025 up to 2026. Competitors such as Porsche and Lamborghini have successfully traversed the challenging phase of making the switch from internal combustion engines to EVs.

The luxury vehicle manufacturer thus gets a chance to learn about what ultra-high net worth individuals want in silent glass electric cars worth $640,000.

The Significance of the Ferrari Luce on Ferrari’s Future

Europe’s most successful carmaker has spent many years cultivating an image based on the engine displacement, the roar from the exhaust, and the sheer thrill of burning fuel for power. With its electric-powered concept car, the Ferrari Luce, Ferrari is trying to make consumers switch their passion to a totally new kind of technology.

The willingness with which the superrich will make such a contribution at this rate of $640,000 is what will inform the aggressiveness of the electric plans by Ferrari beyond just the Luce.
