KP Police takes steps to bridge the communication barrier in far-flung and conflict-ridden areas by setting up a dedicated command-and-control center that ensures the coordination of emergency personnel even when mobile network coverage fails.

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police plans to incorporate a satellite communication system for officers who are stationed in remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because such communication systems can provide a reliable link when traditional mobile networks and telephones become dysfunctional. Indeed, KP police have realized that the lack of a backup communication network was a deficiency in their system.

Why is there a need for the deployment of satellite communication by KP Police currently?

KP Police points out that operation teams that are stationed at distant locations always experience severe communication problems an issue that has previously caused delayed reaction times during emergencies and poor coordination between on-field teams and command teams. This is because the KP Police satellite communication system aims at solving this problem by providing teams with a functional communication platform during situations where cellular and phone lines are likely to be interrupted.

Bannu and Lakki Marwat are priority one

The program will start from Bannu and Lakki Marwat, among others, before reaching other parts of the province. It is known that both districts have had their share of security problems, and this is a good place to implement such a system since its main purpose is to sustain operations in dangerous areas where communication matters most.

  • The deployment of satellite communications is initiated in Bannu, Lakki Marwat, and other distant locations.
  • Command center for control: A separate control center will be developed to run the entire satellite system.
  • Team of experts: This particular team will manage the daily activities of the system.
  • Phase 2 and beyond: This system will then extend its services to other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

What the system aims to solve

According to police officers, the KP Police satellite communications network should help address the communication challenge that has always been a problem among operational teams in hard-to-reach regions, and which has made it difficult for command centers to obtain timely information from the scene of the emergency. Timely acquisition of information would be important in facilitating a quick response since delays in obtaining information would mean a delay in dispatching resources, even the best ones.

Disaster and Crisis Channeling System

In addition to regular policing operations, the satellite system is depicted by KP Police as a resiliency tactic in case of a wider crisis. According to officials, the system is an alternate means of communication that will function through periods of disasters and crises, when any damage to infrastructure or traffic can bring down traditional systems, forcing coordination over surviving ones.

How this development will impact public safety in KP

As per the officials in police force, the introduction of satellite communications for KP Police will directly add to the capability of the police department to respond to emergencies, claiming that satellite technology will contribute to better results and efficiency in rescuing operations in the province. The process of setting up the advanced satellite communications system is stated to be moving fast, although there are no timelines available about when the system will become operational in Bannu and Lakki Marwat, and other districts in the province.
