LAHORE: In celebration of World Blood Donation Day, IG Punjab Abdul Kareem orders the field units to set up more camps for collecting blood, and he mentions that the officers continue to help the patients of thalassemia and hemophilia at Pakistan’s first Virtual Blood Bank Center.
To observe World Blood Donor Day, the Punjab Police took an initiative to go beyond their regular police responsibilities. The blood donation campaigns conducted by Punjab Police have become an organized activity under the community policing plan of the Punjab Police, wherein the Inspector General Abdul Kareem has instructed all field formations to organize more blood donation camps along with private organizations in Punjab.
Blood donation by Punjab Police Community Policing approach
The IG, Kareem has considered blood donation by Punjab Police as one of the most important aspects of the community policing system adopted by the Punjab Police. He paid great respect to police officers and general citizens who make regular blood donations as they provide valuable support to Punjab Police.
Against thalassemia and hemophilia along with the Health Department
Punjab Police Blood Donation Drive works alongside the Health Department as well as private welfare organizations which are concerned particularly with thalassemia and hemophilia – diseases related to blood which need to be replenished through donations and affect children more than adults. IG Kareem emphasized that the involvement of the police force is a show of solidarity against these diseases, not a stand-alone program working parallel to existing healthcare and welfare networks.

More camps held throughout all field formations
The directive issued by IG Kareem requires supervisory officers within all field formations and the police force to arrange for more blood donation camps with the cooperation of private bodies. According to the directive, the primary focus of holding these camps is the timely provision of blood to patients who require it, which can only be achieved through such blood donation camps.
First Virtual Blood Bank Center in Pakistan
The other most important element of the announcement made by Punjab Police about blood donation is the establishment of Pakistan’s First Virtual Blood Bank Center. The center has been built according to the guidelines provided by the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. It has been developed with the help of advanced technology and allows for the instantaneous supply of blood to patients.
The implications for the availability of health care services in Punjab
This is part of a trend where the police organizations in Pakistan have expanded their roles to include welfare activities apart from their traditional policing responsibilities. For those affected by thalassemia and hemophilia, who require regular blood transfusions, the availability of more donation camps along with an improved infrastructure provided by the Virtual Blood Bank Centre will mean a significant improvement. What will matter most is that this is sustained over time and not just a one-off effort on World Blood Donor Day.
