HANGZHOU: A scientist from Pakistan has become one of the newest businessmen in China’s vibrant entrepreneurship environment, after obtaining his business license in a historic occasion that marked the 300,000 mark in market entities registered in Xiaoshan District.
This achievement is indicative of the quick growth of entrepreneurship in the economically important Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, where innovation and technological commercialization are promoted by the government.
Senior officials from the district were also present at the license issuing ceremony held in the Xiaoshan District Government Service Center. These included Jiang Yongzhu, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee and District Administrator and Sun Jianping, Deputy District Administrator along with Lu Yi, District Market Supervision Bureau Director and Chen Yanhong, Director of Xiaoshan District Supervision and Management Office.

Pakistani Scientist Battery Startup
Among the license holders, one Pakistani scientist, Professor Muhammad Yousaf managed to attract much interest due to his achievements in advanced energy storage science.
Speaking after the award of the business license, Professor Yousaf said that the event marked a significant step towards bringing scientific studies into industrial applications. With his new company, Ba Na Chuang (Hangzhou) Battery Technology Co., Ltd., he is hopeful of advancing the process of translating the rechargeable batteries that have been developed through laboratory studies into commercial success.
The goal of the initiative is to help close the gap between scientific breakthroughs and industry, which has been one of the objectives of the Chinese government.
From Lab to Market
Prof. Yousaf holds a PhD degree from Peking University before moving forward for his further studies at Zhejiang University. Prof. Yousaf has authored more than 70 academic papers in reputable scientific journals including JACS, Advanced Materials, and Energy & Environmental Science throughout his scholarly career.
The number of citations on his academic researches is above 3,400, thus adding up to his H-index and i10 indexes, which are 27 and 43, respectively. He has secured four national and provincial research grants worth more than 5.3 million yuan.
According to Focus Pakistan, Professor Yousaf earned several prestigious honors in China, including the Qianjiang Friendship Ambassador Award 2025, the Hangzhou “115” Foreign Talent Introduction Project Award 2024, Zhejiang University’s Youth Talent Excellence Program Award, and the Chinese Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship.
Beyond research, Professor Yousaf actively contributes to the global scientific community. He serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Nano Research and Applications and works as a Guest Editor for Discover Nano and Discover Sustainability.
Xiaoshan Hits 300,000
Meanwhile, Xiaoshan authorities attributed the district’s strong business growth to a combination of digital governance and business-friendly policies. Officials said the district introduced three intelligent analytical platforms this year to improve business entity management, centralized registration, and migration trend monitoring.
Using data-driven governance tools, authorities have identified 881 industrial and commercial clusters across the district. Officials believe these systems will further strengthen regulatory efficiency and support sustainable economic expansion.
The 300,000-business milestone highlights Xiaoshan’s emergence as one of China’s most dynamic innovation centers while showcasing how international talent, including Pakistani researchers, continues to play a growing role in the district’s technology-driven economic development.
