MADINAH, SAUDI ARABIA: The first global appearance of Robobus took place recently in the holy Masjid Quba mosque located in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, which brings together hundreds of years of religious history with artificial intelligence technology.

Saudi General Transport Authority collaborated with Madinah Region Development Authority to actualize the project of testing Robobus in its real environment at Masjid Quba, making its vision of technological innovation a concrete reality at one of the most revered places for Muslims across the globe. This makes Saudi Arabia one of few countries to be utilizing autonomous transportation technology in significant religious and cultural landmarks.

Functions of Saudi Arabia Robobus

The Saudi Arabia Robobus travels on a pre-defined path of 700 meters within the inner courtyard of Masjid Quba. The purposefully selected route allows for proper vehicle movement without deviating from the prescribed route to ensure smooth flow of traffic. Moreover, the Robobus begins its journey from the entrance points for both males and females.

There is no involvement of humans in driving the vehicle. The cameras and sensors of high resolution operate in tandem to identify people walking along the streets and analyze the environment surrounding the mosque compound.

60 Days to Validate the Idea

The Robobus Saudi Arabia will remain at the experimental stage for 60 days, a very significant phase that requires gathering essential data in order to deploy the technology successfully. During the experimental phase, technicians will examine how the car interacts with its environment through digital high-resolution mapping.

The data obtained from the map will directly affect how the self-driving technology will be improved, such that it can run according to real-world expectations and not what is expected in test environments. The Saudi General Transport Authority will use the data collected from the pilot program to assess the efficiency of the process, the service quality criteria, and the customer experience.

Vision 2030 and Year of Artificial Intelligence

Saudi Arabia Robobus has come at a time when Saudi Arabia has marked a year with exceptional significance. The government declared the year 2026 to be the Year of Artificial Intelligence, meaning that all the technological innovations of this year have been part of a greater narrative for Saudi Arabia.

The Robobus pilot project fits right into that story. The Robobus pilot project puts the policy intentions expressed in Vision 2030 into practical implementation at sites that have immense symbolic importance to Saudi Arabia’s place in the international community and to the many pilgrims who visit the country annually.

There is a reason why Saudi Arabia Robobus has been introduced in Masjid Quba instead of a busy commercial area or any other technological park. This is because millions of people visit the city of Madinah throughout the year, and thus, it makes for a perfect place to pilot the technology for self-driving transportation in real-life scenarios.

This program not only enhances the leadership role of Saudi Arabia in the field of intelligent mobility but also provides practical transport facilities for its citizens as well as for millions of foreign tourists who visit Madinah every year.

The Saudi Arabia Robobus is more than just an attempt at testing a new technology; it is a statement by the Kingdom on how it plans to play its cards in the race towards autonomous mobility in cities around the world.
