The accountability campaign in Pakistan has now extended into the international arena. The Interpol Red Notices have been released on Malik Riaz, chairman of Bahria Town, and his son Ali Riaz as Pakistan steps up its hunt for the real estate mogul. NAB Chairman Nazir Ahmed made the announcement during a press briefing.
Interpol Red Notice Explained
The Interpol Red Notice is perhaps one of the highest-ranking warnings issued by international law enforcement authorities. It calls upon the relevant police agencies from within member states to track down and arrest an individual temporarily for extradition purposes or additional legal proceedings. Although a Red Notice is not equivalent to an international arrest warrant, it definitely increases the heat applied on the person and decreases the freedom of movement or operation across national borders. The release of Red Notices targeting Malik Riaz and Ali Riaz marks a significant step up in Pakistan’s quest for accountability in one of its largest-scale financial scandals.
Bahria Town, which Malik Riaz, aged 72, founded from scratch, is one of the biggest private developers in Pakistan. Bahria Town has executed massive residential projects in various urban centers such as Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, transforming the privatized housing industry in Pakistan. Ali Riaz, the son, aged 48, is the CEO of this company today.
However, even with the huge successes achieved by Bahria Town in its business operations, the organization has always found itself within the crosshairs of the law. This is because of claims involving questionable land purchasing policies that have continued to haunt the company for several years now.
Cases that Have Affected Malaysia as Well as Others Countries
The most important legal case involving the impact of Malik Riaz on his homeland is that of the Bahria Town in Karachi. In 2019, the Supreme Court directed that Bahria Town make significant payments to the Government of Sindh regarding the lands it purchased in Karachi. This decision ranks amongst the most important judicial decisions ever handed down against a private property company in the history of Pakistan.
Another significant figure associated with the Al Qadir Trust case is Malik Riaz, who is declared an absconder by the courts owing to high-profile accountability proceedings. The Pakistani government had officially moved extradition proceedings against him along with his son from UAE in early 2025.
£190 Million Confiscated by the United Kingdom
However, the legal issues for Malik Riaz do not end at the borders of Pakistan. In 2019, Malik Riaz and his son agreed to hand over £190 million to the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency after a probe through an unexplained wealth order.

NAB Takes the Pursuit to the Next Level
The affirmation by the NAB chairman of the issuance of the Interpol Red Notices and sending an extradition team reflects a definite upscaling in the bureau’s efforts to bring Malik Riaz to account. The agencies in Pakistan responsible for holding individuals accountable have previously come under fire because of their failure to pursue high-profile cases effectively. However, this case seems different from previous instances because of the international nature of the situation involving the involvement of Interpol, UAE, and previous action taken in the UK against Malik Riaz.
