- Karachi heatwave concerns intensified on Monday after viral social media posts warned of a “heat burst.
KARACHI: The weather department Monday debunked social media claims of an impending “heat burst” in Karachi, clarifying that even while the summer ahead would be severe for the city’s citizens, according to climatic patterns, there would not be a continuous spell of intense heat.
According to the NDMA and PMD officials, there is no meteorological evidence suggesting a prolonged period of intense heat for the city. The rumors went viral in social media and caused considerable alarm among the inhabitants of Pakistan’s most populous city.
A PMD official told Focus Pakistan. “Humidity plays a far bigger role here. That raises discomfort sharply, but it does not produce a continuous heat burst.”
What May and June Actually Look Like
Instead of enduring prolonged heat conditions, Karachi experiences heatwave periods now and then. Temperatures in May should go anywhere from 33 to 36 degrees centigrade. As for June, the situation turns worse as high levels of humidity make the actual experience of warmth go beyond the thermometer’s readings.

The sea breeze is a vital factor that brings about an end to heat conditions in Karachi. In cases where it becomes weaker or stagnant, the temperature increases dramatically.
Early May Advisory Already Active
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Department (PMD) have issued an advisory regarding the heat wave for a short duration in early May which also covers Sindh, including Karachi.
Officials warn that the most vulnerable hours fall between 11 am and 4 pm, when the sun’s intensity peaks.
Karachi Heatwave: Who Faces the Highest Risk
Three types of people are put on high alert by health professionals as follows: children, older people, and workers in open air. For these individuals, some of the tips that are offered cannot be compromised since failure to do so can lead to severe consequences.
- Stay hydrated;
- Avoid direct sunlight;
- Dress light cotton cloths; and
- Acting on any early signs of heat exhaustion.
A City Getting Hotter, Season by Season
But beyond the short-term predictions is an equally troubling truth. Climate experts and city planners warn that there is one undeniable trend – that each decade, the summer season in Karachi becomes increasingly severe. The reason behind this phenomenon is the fast-paced construction, shrinking greenery, heat-retaining infrastructure, and the gradual effects of climate change.
The officials claim that they will update the warnings depending on developments during the months of May and June.
The message from officials is blunt: the heat burst panic spreading online has no basis in fact. But complacency carries its own risk and this summer, Karachi’s residents would do well to take both the season and their own vulnerability seriously.
