The early morning became gloomy in Rawalpindi and throughout the whole country on Wednesday when a Pakistani Army Aviation MI-17 aircraft crashed close to Muzaffarabad, resulting in the death of all the soldiers onboard the plane. The accident occurred during takeoff, and unfortunately, nobody survived.
MUZAFFARABAD: This incident was made public by the Pakistan Army’s media office, known as the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). As per reports from the ISPR, the accident involving the Pakistan Army’s MI-17 helicopter occurred due to some technical glitch that occurred during the crucial stage of takeoff. The helicopter came down when it could not attain sufficient height for escape.
ISPR Verifies Technical Problem, Inquiry Committee Formed
In ISPR’s official statement, it was made abundantly clear that the rescue and recovery teams arrived at the accident scene almost instantly after the crash. The emergency staff moved fast to rescue the fallen soldiers from the accident site, which proved to be challenging due to the mountainous area around Muzaffarabad.
A notable institutional reaction took place when an order was given to set up a Board of Inquiry for probing the technical reasons of the Pakistan Army MI-17 helicopter crash. Boards of Inquiry are routine affairs after aircraft crashes in Pakistan, and their primary responsibility is to present a report highlighting who is responsible and why.
The MI-17, which was developed by Russia’s Kazan Helicopters company, is one of the most popular transport helicopters employed by militaries worldwide. For many years now, Pakistan’s army has been using this model for various purposes ranging from moving troops to performing logistics tasks and even helping victims of natural calamities in its rugged northern part. A mechanical problem during the lift-off of such an aircraft could be fatal because of its sheer weight and surrounding environment.

Although the ISPR press release did not mention the names of the martyred soldiers, it did use the term “martyred” for them. It should be noted that the word “martyred” is used only for those who sacrifice themselves during their military service in Pakistan’s tradition.

Tributes from PM Sharif for Fallen Soldiers
The Pakistan Prime Minister Sharif also made prompt comments following the report regarding the MI-17 aircraft incident in Pakistan. In a statement issued, the Prime Minister conveyed his deep condolences on behalf of the government for their heroic services and ultimate sacrifice for their country.
This shows how seriously the government of Pakistan takes matters concerning military losses. The aviation accidents of army members are emotionally charged incidents in a nation where the military plays a crucial part in their sense of national identity and security.
An Area That Is Characterized by Challenging Geography
Being located where three rivers meet and enclosed by high mountains, flying around Muzaffarabad poses numerous difficulties to pilots. Flying under these circumstances entails being subjected to altitude wind shifts, limited valley flying, and rapid climatic changes. Such conditions pose a challenge to the effective operation of the aircraft, particularly at the point of takeoff when the aircraft operates using full engine capacity.
A Region of Difficult Geography
Placed inside the river valley with many surrounding mountains, flying over Muzaffarabad is hard for the pilots. It is hard for the pilots because of the impact that high-altitude winds, narrow valleys, and variable weather conditions may have on them. This adds extra burden to the flight as it takes place while the plane works to its fullest capacity during the take-off stage.
