Saudi Arabia Drops Hajj Age Restrictions Within Hours and Allows Children From Age 12 Again

The Saudi government took back what was one of the biggest surprises with regard to Hajj policies in the recent past just a few hours after making an announcement about it. Saudi Arabia initially announced Hajj Age Restrictions, a rule of not allowing any individual below the age of 15 years to participate in the Hajj, but very soon retracted its decision and reverted back to its long-established policy of allowing people aged 12 years and above to undertake Hajj.

The Restriction That Was in Place for Just Hours

Nevertheless, the same day but at an earlier hour, an announcement was issued by the Pakistan Aviation Authority in which it was stated that pilgrims below 15 years old shall not enter Saudi Arabia for Hajj by air starting from May 3, 2026. According to the PAA, all Hajj visa applications that were issued to those under the mentioned age would be nullified automatically. Consequently, there was an uproar among Pakistani families who had planned their Hajj journey after obtaining their visas and tickets.

The department of religious affairs, as well as the tour agencies, noted that the number of questions from concerned families regarding the preparations for Hajj had increased dramatically. The element of surprise added to the chaos that pilgrims as well as their families all over the country were facing due to lack of preparation time.

Change of Mind by Saudi Arabia

In just a matter of hours from the first announcement, Saudi Arabia completely revoked the Hajj age limit. As stated by the PAA spokesperson, Saudi Arabia has decided to revoke the ban on Hajj, meaning the old rule stands where those 12 years old and above can perform the pilgrimage. The Ministry of Religious Affairs of Saudi Arabia also verified that they have indeed changed their minds regarding banning pilgrimages for those under the age of 15.

It did not take much time for the Pakistan Hajj Mission to relay the new guidelines. In a letter, it stated that those who are at least 12 years old can go to Saudi Arabia, as planned earlier.Further, it became evident that the rule concerning the minimum age of 12 years to perform Hajj is still valid.

Visa Applications Rejected to be Reconsidered

Among the most practically important points of the policy is that visa applications that were rejected or canceled due to the 15-year age limit can be reconsidered. According to the PAA, any visa application previously rejected based on the rule that children cannot cross the border until they turn 15 years old would be reconsidered.

Visas for pilgrims and families who have experienced the temporary suspension will revert to their rightful place among those whose visas have been approved under the new 12-year period rule. Travel agencies and the planners of Hajj have been told to plan according to the revised conditions for eligibility.

Stability in Policy Is Still Important for Pilgrims

In this instance, the sensitivity of the issue of travel laws when traveling to Mecca for Hajj pilgrimage becomes clear, as well as the damage that may be caused by an unexpected change in travel laws to millions of people. The preparations for Hajj are lengthy, costly, and demand hard work from the traveler him/herself. Even an overnight change in the law could be troublesome.

The government of Pakistan, as well as the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and PAA, have promptly responded by announcing the ban and lifting it as well, thus ensuring that the duration of confusion caused to the affected persons is kept to a minimum. Since the ban on the Hajj age restriction no longer stands, the condition of being at least 12 years old to perform Hajj will be reinstated.
