Curriculum for a PhD degree in Nursing was approved by the Specialty Advisory Committee of the University of Health Sciences, offering a research doctorate program for nurses to cope with an acute shortage of specialized nursing teachers in Pakistan.
On Monday, Pakistan’s nursing profession achieved a new milestone in higher education when the University of Health Sciences (UHS) approved the establishment of the first-ever PhD Nursing Programme in Punjab. This marks an important turning point for Academic Nursing Research and Advanced Clinical Leadership within Pakistan. The recently approved curriculum by the UHS Specialty Advisory Committee creates the opportunity for nurses in Punjab to pursue a Research Doctorate that has previously not existed in the province.
Some information that will apply to all the students in a Nursing PhD Program.
There will be 20 slots available for each enrollment cycle was started by UHS, and are meant to be filled with individuals who have scored 75% (or above) on an entry exam before we begin enrolling students into our first PhD cohort.
The UHS is setting an intentionally high standard for its PhDs’ university curriculum, so that all graduating from this initial program are ready to join the healthcare workforce after they earn their degree. The official application announcement will be released by the UHS during the first week of July.
The PhD Nursing programme was created in response to two converging pressures According to Vice Chancellor, Professor Ahsan Waheed Rathore. First, there is a known shortage of specialist nursing faculty in Pakistan; this impacts upon the quality of nursing education nationwide, which in turn creates bottlenecks for future generations of qualified nurses being trained. Second, there is a need for nursing to become a research–active profession that can provide research-based evidence to enhance clinical practices.
According to Rathore, the programme is intended to develop qualified, expert nursing practitioners and researchers that will assume leadership positions in healthcare in Pakistan. It indicates that the UHS foresees a role for nurses at the PhD level in holding institutional and policy-based positions rather than just providing bedside care.

What a Ph.D. In Nursing Is, and What a Ph.D. in Nursing Is Not
The Ph.D. in Nursing is a research doctorate program. It is also separate from a Medical Degree, and therefore, Ph.D. nurses complete their Doctorate, earn the right to use the title “Dr.,” have completed an entire course of research, will be able to conduct research, have an academic leadership role, and contribute toward the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical guidelines and will not be licensed to practice medicine as a physician nor meet the criteria necessary to have a medical practice.
It has provided the strength of nursing as a profession through research; therefore, nursing as a profession has continued to evolve, rather than creating an entirely new pathway into the field of medicine.
PhD-qualified nursing practitioners will provide improved evidence-based practice, which will enhance clinical standards within the Punjab healthcare system and across all hospitals and healthcare providers. The introduction of the UHS PhD Nursing programme represents the first time in the history of Punjab’s healthcare system that there will be a formal shift toward research-driven patient care in a province where nursing has typically been viewed as a supporting role rather than a separate academic and clinical profession.
