It is one of the most momentous announcements ever to mark a new era for modern Middle Eastern politics as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made it known that Pakistan would host the signing ceremony of the groundbreaking US Iran peace deal in Geneva on Friday.

In his speech delivered during a high-profile sitting of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister said that the international community has made remarkable progress towards achieving a historical moment of peace. After a fifteen-week period of crisis that put at risk the security of the world, both the Americans and Iranians have agreed to immediately stop all their military activities.

The Covert Choreography Behind the “Islamabad Memorandum”

With the Geneva gathering coming up as its formal climax, back-channel diplomacy has been an intense process of exhausting negotiations with Pakistan as the main diplomat around which everything revolved. Known internationally as the Islamabad Memorandum, this process ensured that lines of communication remained open while all-out war in the region was imminent.

Prime Minister Pervaiz Muhammad Shah Sharif explicitly appreciated the great and round-the-clock dedication of the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The PM pointed out that the military leadership was never deterred by the turbulence of the negotiation process, but they systematically defused friction to maintain the fragile ceasefire regime.

Win for All in Transnational Diplomacy

Though Pakistan played the lead role in mediating between the two sides, Prime Minister Sharif pointed out that the US Iran peace deal had been achieved through the cooperation of a well-coordinated consortium of partners in the region:

  • Qatar: Qatar’s Emir has lent indispensable support to the negotiating sessions, being very patient in the process.
  • Republic of Turkiye & Saudi Arabia: The crown prince of Saudi Arabia has helped in providing wise and visionary guidance.
  • People’s Republic of China: President Xi Jinping has been conducting intensive discussions with the leaders of Islamabad.

The Prime Minister officially congratulated President Donald Trump of the United States and the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mohammad Khamenei, for their judicious approach toward wisdom and patience rather than escalating hostilities further on the battlefield.

Address by Prime Minister: “This was not merely a treaty between two countries; rather it was a triumph of peace and diplomacy over the utter destruction caused by war,” stated Mr Sharif. “The historians will always write in golden ink the part played by Pakistan in extinguishing the fire of war.”

Addressing Economic Strains at the Global and National Level

Due to its sudden emergence, the crisis created major ripples on the global economic front by disrupting vital sea routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, and creating huge inflationary pressures. The economy of Pakistan, already burdened by economic restructuring, faced further challenges due to erratic energy prices.

Through guaranteeing the end of the blockade imposed on the naval routes immediately and bringing back the normalcy of maritime transportation in accordance with the newly signed agreement, the global economy will experience quick stabilization. According to Sharif, the hard-won achievements made through ensuring such stability will pay off in terms of easing pressure on inflation for the Pakistani populace.
